| Show :8M The Salt Lake Tribune Friday January 8 1988 For the record: Latest albums by Cher Billy Joel fall flat By Tom McCarthey Tribune Staff Writer CHER "Cher” (Geffcn) — Today the lovely Cher is known primarily as an actress (“Suspect" “Silkwood” “Mask” and "Moonstruck") But there was a time 15 or 20 years ago when she was best known as a singer Record review Back then she tried to get acting work but was rebuffed Now people are questioning whether she can sing A strange world we live in! She married Sonny Bono back in 1964 and recorded several hits with him including “I Got You Babe" "Baby Don't Go" and “The Beat Goes On" As a solo artist she sang such “Half-Breed- " ‘favorites as “Bang-Bang- " "Dark Lady" and “Gypsies Tramps & Thieves" In the ’70s she had a prime time weekly television show and was a star in Las Vegas Eventually she got into a Broadway production of "Come Back To The Five And Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean" before starring in the movie version Her forte soon became motion picture acting and she stopped singing altogether Cher’s back on vinyl with her first album in five years Unfortunately for the listener Cher’s acting is her strength now not her singing The LP is an overblown tedious effort that strains to be hip but fizzles quickly It took more than a year to record "Cher” using five separate produc FANTASTIC PSYCHIC FAIR nu SAT SUN 10 10 am 9 pm find out your past prwnl Juture Public Incited WORLD HOTEL 1900 Sooth ” jackhammer Likewise for “I Found Someone" “Skin Deep” and “Give Our Love A Fightin’ Chance” All are hard rocking overblown tunes that tend to drown out Cher’s voice not enhance it But there is one gem in this rock-pil- e It is entitled “We All Sleep Alone” and is a tour de force Cher’s distinctive voice cuts to the quick as she sings "Well you may have lovers Wherever you roam But sooner or later We all sleep alone" It is a haunting song indeed and could actually be a hit for her BILLY JOEL “Kohuept” (Colum bia) — This is essentially a liv e greatest hits package in which the event — performing in the Soviet Union —- far outweights the music Joel sounds less than inspired here virtually going through the motions on the likes of "Uptown Girl” “Big Shot” and “Only The Good Die Young” Joel made headlines last July when he threw a temper tantrum during a performance in Moscow overturning a piano because he felt the HBO camera crews weren't filming enough of him and audiences were reacting too coolly This “red rage" is missing from the album Too bad There just isn't enough passion to sustain a double album The best things are two surprises — the Beatles’ “Back In The USSrR " and Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A Changin'" They are for the usually super'slick Joel £: There is polite applause scattered throughout the album by the $byiet audiences Listeners will be luflcy if they applaud at all after laboring through this “live” effort ALL MYSTIC FESTIVAL Ju89 ers (including Jon Bon Jovt) in 12 different studios it sounds like it too There is no cohesion In fact the LP sounds as if singing is one of Cher’s pegieeted hobbies and She resurrects “Bang-Bangabsolutely butchers it The original was a simple lament about love gone sour delivered without pretension It snuck up on you and got under your skin The updated version has been turned into a big production number that assaults the senses like a Suit GIGANTIC ELECTRONICS CLEARANCE MAKE THE STEREO FRI AND SMALL ELECTRONICS PURCHASE THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU — ON SALE! 819 SAT JAN BOOGIE TO Public Invited 1 CT r6E0nG2!
