Rushing and pianist Jimmy Jones All three end up performing on the final cut “Hello Little Girl" which Rushing sang in the Swing Era with Count Basie a performance energized by romping big band nffs created on the spot The rest of the album is more formal with Gillespie also appearing and creating definitive muted and open solos on Strayhorns “Upper Manhattan Medical Group Two cuts feature a nine-mapercussion section from New York’s symphony ranks presaging the kind of percussive orchestral sounds later developed by Max Roach's M’Boom group And the album includes a very atmospheric longer work "The Toot Suite” as well as “Satin Doll”“All of Me" (a Hodges feature) and “Fillie Tnllie" an example of how Ellington could create a musical painting out of a couple of simple vamp riffs Ellington band that took the stage at the Newport Jazz Festival m Rhode Island had already embarked on a new era of creativity though the public wasn't aware of it yet Drummer Sam Woodyard who joined the band less than a year before had revitalized the rhythm section and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges had also returned to complete the longest-runninreed section in jazz history Ellington and Billy Strayhorn had written a new work for the festival appearance ‘‘Newport Jazz Festival Suite” in three parts two of them blues and the suite holds up remarkably well when listened to here But it s hard to concentrate on the suite when you know what climaxes the album is the incredible “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue” also in blues form featuring Paul Gonsalves’ chorus tenor sax heroic solo that had the crowd at Newport standing cheering and dancing in the aisles This digital remix brings that crowd right into your living room and the excitement of the moment is palpable And just listen to
