The celebration, which was the Fil-g- i nils way of giving thanks for arriving safely at Plymouth Rock, began the saga of America. Members of the First Congregational Church, as inheritors of the faith of the Pilgrims, have issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation which calls on all people out of an to celehrate Thanksgiving, awareness that God supports and sustains His people through times of prosperity as well as adversity, just as the Pilgrims celebrated that first holiday. Congregationalists, through their proclamation, have affirmed that. Thanksgiving is the joyous outpouring of gratitude to God for all His goodness towards us. Thanksgiving celebrates life, in its richness and diversity: Thanksgiving is a commitment to the ways of righteousness and justice in national and personal life: Thanksgiving Is a determination to live in such a way that the well being of others will be enhanced, and Thanksgiving comes from people who recognize that life, no matter how good or bad it may seem at times, is but a series of opportunities to express faith in themselves, each other and God. Involves Four Protestant Groups Ecumenical Spirit Shows Growth in Utah By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor An ecumenical spirit between four Protestant denominations in Utah means more effective programming and better use of resources on a denominational level for programs. The United Methodist Church, the United Presbyterian Church, the Christian Church i Disciples of Christ) and the American Baptist Church have pooled their resources under the guidance of four committees to plan workshops, work on development and redevelopment, work in youth programming and camping, leadership training and work in areas of social responsbility, according to the Rev. Robert Rigstad, executive secretary of this unique organization called Shared Ministry of Utah The Rev. Mr Rigstad said he believes Shared Ministry is the only organization of its kind in the United States It differs from a council of churches because a council "usually fulfills some limited functions on behalf of the church bodies, but each of those bodies continues to program and resource the churches independently." the Rev. Mr. Rigstad said 10 Years Old Shared Ministries began about 10 years ago as the United Ministries Council. At that time, it was an agreement between the Presbytery of Sun DisUtah and the trict of the United Methodist Church That agreement called for the two denominations to work together on mission planning, budgeting and evaluating at the denominational level, because of the lack of staff people m the two denominations in Utah In 1975. the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) were invited to join and on May 14, 1977. the Disciples hecame part of the organization Then in 197H the name yvas officially changed to Shared Ministry g Others Invited A little oyer a year ago the American Baptist Church and the United Church of Christ were asked to oin Shared Ministry and in September, the American Baptists did join However, due to staff changes within the United Church of Christ, it delajed in joining the others But the Key Mr Rigstad said he anticipates the Cnited Church of Christ becoming a part of the Shared Ministry in 19H2 committees Shared Ministry works through include the Congregational Development Committee, the Local Church Concerns Committee, the Support Committee and the Social Responsibility Committee The Thp Congregational Development Committee has recently developed a strategy to develop congregations throughout the state Land is liemg purchased in areas projected as growth areas and congregations are beginning in those areas Helps Small Inits In addition, the committee works in redeveloping churches which are small or have few members, so the eongrega tion can grow again Rigstad points to Presbyterian Church m In lta as undergoing redevelopment. He said expecting great growth due to The Rev Mr the nr.e it is the proposed Intermountain Power Project and related industry. The Local Church Concerns Committees biggest program, the Rev. Mr. Rigstad said, is in leadership development. This committee conducts teacher training workshops, helps churches with their own youth programs and helps with church camping programs Helps Resources Specifically, the Rev. Mr. Rigstad said, this committee bolsters local church resources and is the one most members contact in Shared Ministry's work The Social Responsibility Committee is the newest It evaluates specialized mission units supported by all levels of the denominations in Utah Such organizations as Utahns Against Hunger, Crossroads Urban Center and the Solid Rock Mission in Brigham City receive funding from Shared Ministry through this committee The committee deals with other social issues such as peace, hunger and criminal justice as well as the energy issue The Support Committee is charged with interpreting the activities of Shared Ministry to the public, to help in developing financial resources in individual congregations and aid m stewardship for congregations. Assists in Work As executive secretary, the Rev Mr Rigstad assists the denominations in their programs, selects priorities and goals for Shared Ministry and plans and directs resources to meet those needs and to implement and evaluate In addition, the Rev Mr. Rigstad-yyork- explained, the Media Resource Center, located in the First Baptist Church, will soon be located across the hall from the Rev. Mr. Rigstad's office. The Media Resource center has been open to any church willing to pay a fee to use the CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY Attntfc tljp (Elntrrh nf W far information ( HI RCH to Seif G ihmjfotn SOUTHEAST Presbyterian minister himself, the Rev Mr Rigstad has been executive secretary of Shared Ministry for about tyyo years Previously he served as associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Salt l.ake City before moving to Los Vngeles. where he served for 7 years Returns to Utah He left California to return to Utah as staff person for the Methodist and Picshyterian churches, but says he sometimes misses the parish ministry especially during the holidays when his office "gets very quiet." as congreg ations get involved in their own holiday planning The rest of the time, the Rev Mr Rigstad keeps np a hectic schedule and it s becoming more hectic as more denominations join Shared Ministry. At this point he sees Shared Ministry expanding, hv including other denominations He would like to see the oiganization include churches which do not have enough congregations to have a indicatory body within Utah, but problems will have to be worked out before such congregations could be included, since Shared Ministry pres ntly works only on the denominational level Although Shared Ministry includes unlv a few denominations, many of its programs are open to all Christians For instance, the Rp Mr Rigstad FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH vibrant independent Christ centered body of Christians 1881 Vm $L 8100 S ) 272 5256 Bible School Worship Evening Service 1 582 8687 SUNDAY SERVICE 10:30 AM Home Harvest Festival thanksgiving Celebration 569 9:45 a.m. 1 M a.m. 6:30 p.m. Re viva Is Slated Each Evening The Solid Rock Church. 740 - 700 East will hold a rcviyal each evening through Tuesday, featuring evangelist Donald Walker, from Champagne. Weigand. bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt City The Mass will be followed bv a reception in lamrdes Parish Hall The Rev Patrick Carlev pastor of St Man's of the Assumption Church in Park City explained that it wasn't too many years ago that divorce was not much more than a distant possibility for Catholics, with only occasional marriages that did not work out But recently that has changed and there is presently hardly an American fannliy. Catholic or otherwise, that has not experienced divorce somewhere m its immediate family network Heie m Utah, for the past two years, a divorced Catholics group, affliated with the national organization has been helping divorced Catholics remain within the church Speaks to Divorced after the group was formed in Shortly Utah, the Rev Jim Young, national chaplain for the organization spoke to more than 150 divorced Catholics in Salt Lake City. In his book, Ministering to the Divorced." Father Young points to a sort of "catch-u- p phenomenon" experienced by Catholics in this country, largely immigrants or children of immigrants. Father Young explains they worked hard to advance themselves in education, entering the professions, becoming middle and upper class, seeking to give their children every advantage, finally becoming by the late 1960s so mainstream they no longer differed from the population at large Older values about marriage and family gave way to new expectations about personal fulfillment in marriage, friendship and greater sexual satisfaction Also, concerns about raising children and providing for their emotional nurture and education raised questions about large families. Impart on Family And a new appetite for leisure, a freer role for women and higher education all had a dramatic impact upon the Catholic family as well as other American families. Father Young explains the Catholic community responded with shock and denial, rejection of the divorced and finally acceptance of the painful reality that divorce is and will be a part of Catholic lives for some time to come. In recent years, a growing ministry to separated, divorced and remarried Catholics has sprung up in the American Church and it is estimated there arc now over 1.000 support groups, official diocesan ministries and the national organization which have given structure and momentum to the new ministry.
