Friday, November oman Kills Husband W - I I T Thou Self WASHINGTON (AP) The Wlute House made inquiries of the Food and Drug Administration on behalf of Nancy Reagan's stepfather, a medical equipment consultant, about a new surgical suture awaiting FDA approval, a presidential spokesman said Thursday. Later in the day, the Department of Health and Human Services, the FDA's parent agency, announced tersely that its inspector general has opened "a preliminary inquiry to establish the facts in the case. The first lady s stepfather, retired neurosurgeon Dr. Lcyal Davis, was a longtime consultant to Ethicon Inc. of Somerville, N.J.. the leading U S maker of surgical sutures. The FDA approved Ethicon s new PDS (polydiox-anone- ) suture last Fiday, but the agency said its decision was based "on science," not on the two phone calls it got from a White House aide last May asking for a status report on the suture. Davis and Michael Deaver, Reagan's deputy chief of staff, had a casual conversation a while ago during which Dr. Davis mentioned the suture and. wondered if somebody could check he status," White House press aide Mark Weinberg said.
