By John Mooney Tribune Sports Editor Is the defense the University of Utah football team has mustered this season awesome or "aw. Mime? question may be answered Saturday when Utah plays Arizona State at Tempe, against a veteran offense which scored three or more touchdowns in nine of its 11 games a year ago. An offense which scored 29 against Houston, 42 against Oregon State, 21 each against Ohio State and USC, 27 against Washington State, 37 against Pacific. 34 against California, 42 against Oregon and 44 against Arizona must be respected. In a 4 season for Coach Darryl Rogers in his first year at Arizona State, the Sun Devils failed to generate offense against Washington when ASU was shut out, 25-winner over the Sun and UCLA, a Devils. Even in the other losses, to Ohio State, and USC, the Arizona offense generated points. Last year, ASU offered a balanced offense, rushing for a net 2,046 yards in 477 attempts and passing for 2,121 yards in 353 passes. For 830 total offensive plays last year, ASU averaged five yards for every time the ball was put in The1 7-- 23-1- 1 38-2- 1, 23-2- play! He may be smaller than most collegiate .. fullbacks, but Brewer flows over a football field like a mountain brook methodically bubbles across a meadow. "But Dave (Arslanian) had played against Rodney and Scottsdale Community College twice and he kept saying hey, hes a player; hes a winner. We found out in the spring just how good he is. Hes about as quick as any back Ive ever seen and he can catch 1 the football. "Most backs like Rodney who are small and quick just run left and right and try to fake people, continued Price. But Rodney has the ability to cut upfieid and get those extra two or three yards. He can do more than just run laterally and get to the outside,. Everyone asks how tall Rodney is. But does anyone ever ask how tall Tony Dorsett is? Of course not,-C Dorsett is great so who cares? to a and tailback Weber as Brewer, who came picked up 108 yards rushing in the spring game, recognizes his new duties as a fleet fullback. And he likes the challenge. "I like blocking and leading the plays," said the junior, who runs a 4.6 4Pyard dash. "01 course, I like to carry the ball more than block, but 1 can block and catch the ball too. The big guys on defense always think theyre going to clohher me, but I get a kick out of clobbering them too. What brought Brewer to Weber State and how is he adjusting? There were a few other colleges like Idaho State . interested in me, but the new coaches here really seemed enthusiastic and they acted like they really, said the two-tim-e wanted me, selection at Scottsdale Community College. Ive lived in Arizona all of my life and never really been away from home, but Im getting used to Utah. Ive made some friends here and were anxious for the season to start Saturday. Brewer, Caskey, Phil Swan and Kelvin Matthews, hope to pump new blood into an anemic Wildcat . running game that averaged only 61.4 yards in 1980. Of course, Price plans to employ Brewer and comrades as primary pass receivers in his multiple set offense, but Weber will also be trying to establish credibility on the ground. His name is Rodney Brewer. But if you expected a large, hefty fellow who looks like he could walk through brick walls, look again. The elusive Brower stands and weighs 165 pounds soaking wet, hardly the vital statistics of the average college fullback. Frankly, Rodney looks more like a mathematics major than a football player. And upon prodding, he flashes that infectious smile and admits his true height is even on the official Weber though he is listed at roster. Tribune Special PROVO This will be the first game for Arizona State, but with a veteran squad returning, this isnt expected to be that big a disadvantage, especially since only Utahs defense appeared to have played a game against Utah State. Last time the Utes played Arizona State, the Sun Devils whomped Utah 9 in Salt Lake City in Coach Howards first season as Ute coach. Strangely enough, the last time Utah beat Arizona State was the 8 victory in 1976, one of the three wins Coach Tom Lovat mustered before he was released by the Utes. Hidd Ennis at least vitals such as height have never bothered Brewer. The only statistics which are vital to him are those written in record books, many of which the native of Mesa.
