Show 16B The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday, November 3, 19K4 New Park City Triple Chair Lift Entices Skiers By Craig Hansell Tribune Sports Writer PARK CITY Utah's largest is even bigger. The massive Park City ski resort has a new triple chair this season bringing the total uphill capacity to 16,900 skiers per hour on twelve lifts and the gondola. The new Ctec lift is capable of whisking 1,800 skiers per hour up the 937 vertical feet to Pioneer Ridge in eight minutes. Serving six new runs and Blue Slip Bowl, Pioneer provides access to powder terrain skiers have hiked to in the past. Pioneer is adjacent to Puma and McConkey's Bowls. And the lift is probably a minor addition to Utahs biggest ski resort in view of the events scheduled at Park City this season. This is Park City destined to become a world-clas- s season. Not only has Park City been selected to host two World Cup slalom races (a mens and a women's) but it will also be the site for the International Special Olympics, the Black Summit ski club meeting and the annual U.S. Ski Team Celebrity Classic (which last season raised a record $240,000 for the USST). Despite the constant state of building that dominates the Park City area, spokesman Craig Badami assures the resort is ready for operation. If it were Thanksgiving or if we had anothcomv2 feet of snow, Id be open now, er mented Bedami. The resort could be partially open as soon as Monday but that hasn't stopped skiers from enjoying the early snow. "The snow is real good. commented Park City resident Jeff Fuller, a transplanted New Yorker who moved to Utah four years ago for the skiing. "I hiked up the U.S. Ski Team lift and then skied the backside down Three Kings and out Thaynes Canyon. 1 three easier runs brings the resort total to 80 established runs. "It takes 33,000 gallons of water to cover an acre with three inches of snow," Badami revealed about the resort's snow making "We are pumping 600,000 gallons a night." Talking to Bedami about the resort is difficult. Somehow the topic always comes back around to the World Cup races, which he is proud of attracting as Utahs most significant alpine skiing competition ever staged here. "We havent been able to calm ourselves down," Bedami said. "Ive been to Europe during World Cup races and they even watch it on TV like we would watch the World Series. We are expecting 5,000 spectators a day to watch the races and we are going to build bleachers and have refreshment booths to accomodate spectators. We hope to keep our expenses below $250,000. Best snow I've skied on in November. It was the earliest I ve skied out here and I didn't hit any rocks. I came out here for skiing and school he is entering his senior year of electrical engineering at the University of Utah and it Utah skiing has lived up to my expectations. It has gotten better every year. Now Im taking a year off to ski. Nov. 12 is the earliest Park City has opened for business and despite the scheduled opening on the 16th, Badami fully expects to set a new earliest opening date. Last year Park and the record City logged 487,000 skier-day- s season is 520,000 when Park City officials figure 50,000 skier-day- s were picked up because Sun Valley had a poor snow year. And Thurl Bailey, playing his first game in a week, missed all six shots he took in nine rusty minutes off the bench. "He's out of sync," said Layden. Also, for the first time, we took him right into the game at small forward." Layden made an interesting switch, playing Kenny Natt as Griffith's substitute for six minutes instead of Bob Hansen. The pattern continued at the start of the second set with Durie, making few mistakes and volleying with precision, breaking her opponent twice to take a 0 lead. Potter, who had been unable to find her timing earlier in the match, suddenly began to hit the ball more cleanly and surged back to win five of the next six games. Twice Durie served to save the set and at 6 it went to a tiebreaker. On the next point, Potters service return went wide and the match was over. Durie had lost to Potter the last time the Wightman Cup was played here two years ago and admitted she had thoughts of 1982 when her opponent fought back in the second set. With Brighton already open for the season and cross country tracks open at Brian Head Cross Country Center and Brighton Ski Touring Center, Utah is well on its way to a very early ski opener. Park Citys Town lift, which provides direct access to the slopes from beautiful downtown Park City, is under construction and is scheduled for completion by next season. The addition of more underground parking and new base facilities also enhances Park City as a destination for skiers and the three areas (Park City, Park West and Deer Valley) create a growing enticement for skiers.
