Forsyth and Dr. Joel C. are conducting a study of how the Utah Valley was when only IndiJan-etsk- ans occupied the region. According to the two professors, Utah Valley was an important center of Indian population before the white man arrived. Utah Lake offered abundant resources, in contrast to the arid regions nearby. "Utah Lake is the largest freshwater body in the eastern Great Basin, Forsyth said. "Utah Valley was and is a rich environment, with plenty of fish in the rivers, a lot of marshy areas with fowl, muskrats and other animals, plus many edible wild plants like bulrush and cattails." They hope to piece together a picture of what life was like for Utah Valley Indians by studying artifacts and early historical accounts. A collection of artifacts was recently loaned by James Bee, a zoologist at the University of Kansas who was raised in Utah Valley. During the 1930s, Mr. Bee made several excavations, recording what he found and where he found it. The collection artifacts is now being studied. It contains such items as arrow points, stone scrapers for tanning hides, pottery and animal bones. The professors say they hope to recruit local citizens help because Anglo populations settled right on top of the old Indian settlements, making excavation difficult. "You cant just go running around people's yards and digging up their lawns, so we're asking people who have found things to contact us." Mr. Forsyth said. SO. 900 EAST 67 NORTH 100 EAST 1 344 W.
