Gold prices fell, with Republic National Bank quoting gold as of 4 p.m. EDT at $370.50 a troy ounce, down $4 40 from Thursdays late bid. Much of the dollars strength this year reflects rising interest rates, which lifted yields available on investments. Many economists believe a slowdown in the rate of economic expansion in the United States will help reduce private credit demands, and relieve the upward pressure on interest rates. Two reports Friday appeared to signal the slowdown is occurring. The Labor Department said wholesale prices held steady in May for the second straight month, and the Federal Reserve said industrial production rose 0.4 percent in May, the smallest gain since November. dollar-denominate- d But European dealers said the reports failed to discourage some Middle East and commercial buyers from making large purchases of dollars.
