Campground spaces are hard to find. Its roads and trails are crowded with people looking for a fine outdoor experience in the midst of alpine splendor. The scene this time of year is far different, however. While canyons near the Wasatch Front are crowded with alpine and cross country skiers, sleigh riders and tubers, and snowmobilers looking for a parking spot, Mirror Lake is largely quiet. Vet. while there are no huge ski resorts or nordic centers serving the area, attempts are being made to provide some quality recreation experiences while helping to relieve some of the crowded conditions along the Wasatch Front. 'Our job is to provide recreation in both the summer and the winter, says Dan Symmes, recreation forester for the Kamas Ranger District. And we dont have the crowds they do in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Working with wilderness ranger Frank Erickson, volunteers lslie and Ingrid Fagre and under a new agreement with the Utah Department of Highways, Symmes is trying to provide a quality winter re- f . rt r-- KAMAS ; '? Utah Ice Fishings Hot in Most Areas cross-countr- The miserable, cold weather m many Utah valleys has discouraged fishermen from venturing outside, but the Division of Wildlife Resources reports that those anglers who are braving the cold are finding surprisingly good results. According to Bruce Anderson of the DWR, the cisco run is all but over at Bear Lake. Big fish fishing should be picking up at Bear Lake, said Anderson, who reported that the cisco run was one of the best in recent memory. One of the big problems at Bear Lake is that everyone is leaving litter on the ice, which is detracting from the experience. Fishing along the Weber River has been good for whitefish with flows generally being kept low. Anglers there can take two brown trout. Willard Bay is receiving light pressure and crappie have been tough to catch. Fishing at night has been best and Pelican Lake is good for bluegill fishing through the ice, especially at night, while Flaming Gorge, which is frozen in some bays, should pick up soon. He says hard money is better spent grooming trails in the Woodland and Lake Creek areas which receive more advanced skiers. These arent groomed, but they are well marked. They include one trail which ends 6 near Woodland, a Mine Trail, a Loop Trail and a trail along the Pme Valley Road. There are steeper areas full of powder for those looking to telemark or for more of a challenge. The Taylors Fork trail is the most difficult in the system. Snowmobilers, meanwhile, have lost the 10 miles of highway now being plowed to Soapstone. Snowmobiles are prohibited from using the area just off the highway and are asked to use the groomed areas above the gate. The State Division of Parks and In conjunction, a marked and y ski system groomed has been developed just off the highway but off it far enough that it is not visible from the road. The trail system begins near the confluence of Slate Creek and Beaver Creek about six miles east of Kamas. The main trail is marked with signs. About six miles of trail is being groomed with a snowmobile and trail groomer. It ends at the Pine Valley Campground. Were grooming the trail once a week or as needed, says Erickson. Its not a perfectly groomed race course but just a good touring trail. Snowmobiles are not allowed on the skiing trails. A good day trip for families or novice skiers who have two vehicles is to park one at the lower trailbead cross-countr- use. Still, there is little conflict between skiers and snowmobilers. Forest Service, state and private officials involved with recreation in the area are trying to provide a winter experience which could take some of the pressure off the overcrowded Wasatch Front area. They say that, if youre tired of battling the crowds and the difficult skiing found east of the Wasatch drive Front, the extra might make a big difference in the quality of your winter experience.
