Model Train Show Opens Friday Odds are that when you were a kid either you or somebody in your family had a model train. Maybe it was your father's old set or your brothers. Or maybe it was your very own. Americans have a definite fascination with the old Iron Horse. On Friday and Saturday, local train modelers will be able to show their skills, and those interested in the hobby will be able to gather information when the Wasatch Division of the National Model Railroad Assocation hosts its second annual Model Railroad Show The show at the Northwest Multipurpose Center, 300 N. 1300 West, Salt Lake City, will run Friday from to 10 p.m. On Saturday the doors will open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Admission will be J1 per person with a 32 maximum per family Featured will be two large operating layouts made up of several individual sections The sections, or modules, are individually designed by members of the Wasatch Divi- 6 sion. The modules are connected together to form a truly unique layout, said Ric Bezzant of the Wasatch Division. Each section reflects the theme the builder wishes to portray. Awards and Achievements Other attractions will include clinics, railroad movies and slide presentations, a flea market of model railroading items and commercial exhibitors with displays of new products. For the older kids, there will be an operating layout featuring the older and popular Lionel Trains of the 1950s, Mr Bezzant said. "Model Railroading is one of the most versatile of all hobbies. Its a fascinating world of railroading, real and model. With this show we hope to open the doors to a wonderful hobby that can be a most pleasurable activity for years to come. Fire Chief Merrill Ross said the department needs to fill 10 spots va cated because of retirement, or by volunteers who have left the area. The department has been a volun teer organization since around 1916, and Chief Ross said the department is allowed 44 positions for volun- teers Because of the retirement of several members and others who have moved from the area, including one who left the state, the department only has 34 volunteers.
