Show 4K news, Tuesday, November DESERET 8. 1983 Tuesday, November 8, 1983 The Salt Lake Tribuae New facility is machine for exhibitions If youve driven past the entrance to the new Salt Palace expansion on west South Temple during the past few months, you no doubt noticed the blue exterior of the lobby. Many Salt Lakers have wondered and worried about that color choice; one woman even called the Salt Palace to complain that not only was the color unattractive, but also "the paint is beginning to peel, too. Actually, the blue color was just a temporary covering to protect the exterior while under construction. Today, the blue has been peeled off and the building shines in radiant white. The new expansion has been under construction since Dec. 7, 1981 Basically, it is a column and beam frame alumistructure with an Aluco-Bon- d num sandwich panel exterior skin The main architectural feature is the lobby The glass in front is 180 feet long, and when viewed from outside, creates a beehive effect. The stepback appearance is for accoustical treatment when bands noise events are and other high-levheld in the lobby. This design also ensures that the building does not dominate Symphony Hail by its size Inside the lobby, castellated beams are prominent. These steel beams can span greater distances with less weight All structures are exposed, the mechanical and the machine lighting giving a high-tec- s5 . h look It's a machine for exhibitions, and the theme is carried on through to the exhibit hall, said Dave project architect. Commenting on the structural details, he stat- 4W Can-zonett- i, ed that the circulation link connecting the old building and the new building was built on columns of steel wrapped with concrete. The link is designed for 100 pounds per square foot live load and is stronger than one supported by cables Because of the new underpass, the Salt Palace expansion became a four-storstructure It did not have shear walls, so we used the concrete stairs as the shear connection These are the only shear stairs in the state. The interior design by Dick Peterson and Associates features gray and white. The floor is white tile accented by a carpet in various shades of blue Teal blue carpeting runs up the wall of the lobby giving a warm textured effect Mauve accents are used in the exhibit halls, the graphics there ranging from a dusty pink to a deep mauve Other graphics are executed in gradation of blue The firm of Edwards and Daniels Architects were architects for the expansion. The Design Team was headed by Ron Simmons, project manager Burke Cartwright was the project designer and Dave Canzon-ett- i was project architect. it j,- W' xjA, ' k V rv Jf , sin M, , - 4' y 1 Aerial view of Salt Palace expansion, under construction, shows its location in relation to original Salt Palace structure and Symphony Hall. Booking conventions and trade show is real juggling act If you find keeping a monthly date book is a hassle, image keeping track of dates that stretch far into the future. Kathy Schall, director. Convention Sales, and Doug Borg, exposition executive of the Salt Lake Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, noted that the Salt Palace has convention sales booking up into the 1990s. Many shows, such as large boat shows, book five years ahead. "It's a real juggling act, they said. Conventions and trade shows planned for the future include: 1985 American Choral Directors National Genealogical Society American Podiatry Association 1988 Singing in America International Artificial Organs and Life Support Symposium Trade Association American Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association Show 1989 National F unerai Association 1987 Health Physics Society American School Food Services Contract Bridge League 1988 Teachers Music National Association National Association of Conservation Districts National Tour Association American Numismatic Association.
