Before I pass," he said, I d like to write another Broadway show -white or black. The color doesnt mean anything to me. Ive already had five on Broadway: Shuffle Along, Elsie, Chocolate Dandies, Lou Leslies Blackbirds and 'Eubie!,' All of them m collaboration with Noble Sissle. I dont recall any Negro ever writing for five Broadway shows. Composing is all 1 know how to do. I write eight or 10 bars and Marion (his wife of 37 years and manager until she died last June) puts them away. I check my other numbers to see if I'm repeating myself. Please don t think 1 m bragging you'ie I could go asking me the questions down in that cellar now and if they needed two musicals, I wouldn't have to write anything further. There must be 3,000 tunes down there with copyrights. I write so much I get writer's cramp. Celebrated Career Eubie Blake, reed-thiand died Saturday of pneumonia, just five days after observing his 100th birthday. His death closed out a celebrated career that began at age 15, when he played organ in Baltimore hook shops" brothels. He left memories, of course, n puckish-lo- oking, the mure mcmuiuble a pleasant February afternoon in 1979 in his Brooklyn home Blake rehashed his life and career, beginning with the early days in Baltimore. He said his mother once gave him two cents to buy a incodfish cake and the stead invested the money in eight cigarettes. Blake went on to puff blithely through the decades, despite the U S. surgeon generals caveat against the cigaielte habit. People are always after me about my smoking," Blake said that afternoon. "They say its bad for my health and I tell them, Look, you dont smoke but you're going to die, aiming too.' Racially Victimized Blake's life was characterized by an unmistakable jo ic de mere and a surprising lack of bitterness in later years against those who may have racially victimized him. ( I dont hate anyone, certainly because of anyones color, he had said ) As evidence of his philosophy, he had made arrangements to leave all of his compositions, half to a black college, half to a white one. By 1930, Eubie Blake was already an cider statesman of music. He was forced into involuntary retirement in 1946 because his composing skills were not in demand. During a long dry spell, he studied the Schillinger system of New York University, and completed the course at age 66. And he continued to compose in the three-stor- y brownstone in Brooklyn. One Blake creation provided considerable mileage for Harry S Truman, campaigning for election to the presidency in 1948. Im Just Wild About Harry. composed with Sissle in 1921, was No. 1 on the Democrats hit parade during the confrontation President Truman must have gotten permission to use the song from the publisher, said Blake," "but he never got in touch with me Blake drew a strong distinction between a songwriter and a composer. A songvuitcr is a "piano player who didn't study composition," he said Blake also issued an observation of modern-dapopular pianists: They played chords while ignoring the bass. The chords must sit on the bass just as the world sits on an axis, said Blake. When you leave the bass out, youve left out the best part of music. While Blake, then 97, discussed allied musical topics in a living room whose wallpaper was virtually hidden by the many citations from educational institutions and political leaders, he moved over to the piano and began to play one of his most popular songs, "Memories of You. The first chorus was taken at a straight ballad approach, the second in spry ragtime. "Memories of You (He later acknowledged that of all the interpretations he had heard of "Memories of You, his favorite was the one used by trumpeter Sonny Dunham.) Then, for his enthralled audience of one, he performed Can't Help Lovin Dat Man," wiitten by Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern. y Despite solicitious reminders cwntmti Blake had not fully recovered from an illness that had left him somewhat weakened and not even his wife, he confided, knew about his true condition, lest she forbid his taking part in the fete. Blake had said he would play something simple at the concert following the banquet. pw S nick I i'-- ' f i $T' t V 278 ,rLr wKEiqmra AP HR Sjs Best Friends 2:55 SENIOR CITIZENS $2 ANYTIME!
