Slade, M.D. Cold weather can be invigorating, but it can also present some real dangers. Test your knowledge concerning frostbite and hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature). Which of the following are true? Frostbite is always accompanied by a warning pain. Frostbite should be treated by placing snow or ice on the numb areas. An elderly person with a severe drop in body temperature will start to shiver. , . i Socialization Program Set Winter enthusiasts and senior citizens beware: Each of these statements is false. Frostbite may cause an itchy sensation along with numbness, but this warning may not be present in all cases. One of the greatest fallacies is that frostbite should be treated by rubbing the affected area with snow or ice. And an elderly person exposed to cool temperatures (even in the low 60s) does not shiver or turn pale as would most people.
