Men and All M ZLV8UU w Chris Edwards recollection Tuesday of meeting the object of his month-lonindoctrination into the Unification Church took on all the drama of a novel about an unwitting victim in the throes of danger. g Mr. Edwards, addressing . I I Ladies V a crowd which nearly filled the main floor of Kingsbury Hall at the University of Utah, recalled being awakened at 5:30 a.m. and ordered into a prayer room full of people praying on their knees in front of a picture. I put my head on the carpet, and I remember looking up and seeing a photograph of this chubby little Korean man in a business suit (Rev. Sun Myung Moon), noted Mr. Edwards. And they told us We refer you to the Messiah . . . Hes going to lead us into the kingdom of heaven. Mr. Edwards, who wrote a book, published in 1979, titled "Crazy for God: The Nightmare of Cult Life," detailed how he was unwittingly recruited as a member of Rev. Moon's church by a front organization and then rescued by his parents with the help of a noted religious cult deprogrammer." Emotional War Calling the time he spent on a farm subtly being recruited as a Moonie "very, very stressful, Mr. Edwards said he actually felt an emotional war going on in his mind. But he said he could not break away from the movement because he had to feel emotionally bonded to the recruiters, who had made him learn to accept a role of a child who needed someone in authority, like the Rev. Moon, to get by. Mr. Edwards said the indoctrination even caused physiological changes in him, such as wide, glassy eyes and a flat face with a childlike smile. The recruiters even taught a way to suppress any thinldng that threatened the teachings of the religion or doubts a member might have about those tenets, said Mr. Edwards. He said members were told merely to repeat the phrase Glory to have peace on earth repeatedly in their minds. Met Recruiter Mr. Edwards said the conditioned response worked well for moonies proselyting who heard harsh words If I didnt like from what you said, it (the response) snapped in my mind, he added. The former Moonie said he was recruited when he was on a vacation in California after graduating from Yale University. He was thinking about the possibility of entering graduate school at Berkeley. Mr. Edwards said he met a man at Berkeley he called Jacob, who asked him a few questions about himself and offered advice as to where he could stay while in California. He quoted Jacob as saying he coincidentally had the same major in college, just one of many similarities. In a sense, I had found someone who was a peer," said Mr. Edwards. But he lied explicitly. He had actually learned a method of spotting people like myself . . . (and then became) a mirror of my identity." Mr. Edwards said Jacob then invited him to dinner where everyone was "much too friendy Thus, he said, they built ambivalence in newcomers by making them feel fearful yet trusting. After singing some songs, the dinner guests heard a talk from a man Mr. Edwards called Dr. Dunhill, who claimed to be the head of Creative Community Projects. Mr. Edwards said the doctor," who he later learned taught remedial spelling at a junior college, talked about the need for people to open up" and fully utilize their potential. T)eendant Child During the dinner the guests began singing songs such as Zippity Do Da and You Are My Sunshine. Little did I know at this point people had been assigned to to make me view convert me myself as a pssive, dependent child." Mr. Edwards then accepted the invitation to a farm, where he thought he could feel free to explore and become emotionally refreshed. Instead, he said, he and others were hurried into a circle and led in exercise and began imitating a man in tfie center who had squatted down like a duck. ... People began to look inappropif they didnt engage in such activities, said Mr. Edwards. One woman he called Eve began emerging as a parental figure to his group. riate These are special Thanksgiving week prices. Many other gifts are also now available at special prices.
