| Show ANCIENT STONE SUN DIAL it was waa built I 1 nto into a church buttress probably in the thirteenth century tho the stone su sun 1 i dial probably of 0 the thirteenth century which has ju just st been placed in the south wall of the chancel of west clandon church Is likely to be 0 of considerable interest to anti queries qu aries the dial which has unfortunately tuna tely last its gnomon was till recently built into the tha western side ot of it buttress having apparently been regarded as a piece ot of stone of 0 no value the stone on which the dial la Is cut la Is of 0 chalk and tho the dial Is about a toot foot across the engraving of 0 the lines line on the face Is deep and sharp tho the stone being in a good state beato of 0 breser ration and the hole hola in gnomon had been fixed la Is wide and deep at each of those positions on the fae face ot of the dial which in a clock would woold be ba called the quarters quart erg four our dote ire are engraved but these dots are arranged in indifferent different positions sundials sun dial uch such as aa that at west clandon are not at all rare and at one time they were probably placed on every church indeed at saltwood Salt wood in kent there are three close together but particular interest attaches to the bi specimen ec linen at west clandon from the tha fact act that it Is much nearer perfect than in fill generally the th case tho guardian |
