Malan Tribune Sports Writer There seems to be quite a few question marks about the baseball teams in Region Six. But there is little doubt that the team to beat is the Murray Spartans. Still, even the Spartans have their Achilles heals. Take the pitching staff. Beside senior Paul Beck, who played a key role in 3 the Spartans region e record and a finish in the state a year ago, Coach Bill Sieben-ber- g is placing his hopes on the arms of four Mike Simpson, juniors John Johnson, Spencer McDonald and Lawrence Roybal and sophomore Keith Chapman. Siebenberg is confident his young staff can carry his team back to the state 11-- fifth-plac- tournament, but the question is will it have enough experience if or when the Spartans get there to compete with Mountain View, American Fork or Ben Lomond? How about the Spartans offense? Graduation stripped them of a big chunk of offense, not to mention basepath intimidation, with the loss of second baseman Floyd Armstrong. It will be the duty of Kirk Imamura to fill in the gap. Question mark. But even with those preseason puzzles yet to be solved, the Spartans should have enough experience to claim their third region championship under Siebenberg. At West, Coach Gean Plaga is blessed with a fine crop of athletes, but little experience and less pitching. The Panthers have a squad of two seniors, eight juniors and three sophomores. Two of the sophs will find vaness and Keith Knighton to make up the difference. The combination of themselves attempting to carry their team from the mound. Milton Schultz and Jedd Austin join senior Dan Gomez and juniors Duran and Southern could give the Cubs one of the best batteries in the state. But its on the offense that West is most J.B. Chidester and Stephen Glasker in com- prising the Panther concerned pitching staff. Plaga has reaon to be concerned. With three of the key players from Souths 3-- third-plac- e about his pitcher and catcher. Im concerned about our hitting, West admitted. Southern is a great catcher, but he has to hit for us too. He is struggling right now. He hasnt got a hit in our first three preseason games. I know he is a much better hitter than that and Im sure hell come around. The other three Region Six teams Judge Memorial, Jordan and have a number Tooele team of a year ago back in the lineup, the Cubs would be expected to optimistic about the coming season. But perhaps more important than the players returning are the players lost. Coach Keith West is face with the chore of replacing Doug Tonge, Matt Poison, Kelly Edwards and Brent Moyes from the Cubs fine 1981 team. West will be lookbasketball ing to player Mark Duran,Steve Southern, Dave Ca- of individual stars, but questionable depth. Shortstops are the forte at Judge and Jordan, where Justus Romero and Jimmy Nelson occupy the key position. Romero has already attracted the attention of college recruiters with his outstanding range, while Nelson is beginning his fourth season as a Beetdigger starter. Nelson is hoping a knee injury which plagued him during the basketball season wont hamper his effectiveness on the diamond.
