Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, April 11, 1982 N-Expo- Alliance Forms Lobby For the Unemployed Rising unemployment and cuts in social services have prompted a ; local group to begin lobbying for the unemployed. ' The National Alliance Against i Racist and Political Oppression, ; based at the Crossroads Urban Center, 347 S. 400 East, is organizing an Unemployment Council, to the Rev, Tony Watkins, ; an alliance member. Although specific plans for the council are not yet formulated, its h activities may include lobbying leaders for changes in . political ! legislation to benefit the poverty stricken and unemployed, Mr. kins said. Thinks Like Hoover The council's first meeting ini' eluded comments from some mem-- bers who recalled the Depression. The Depression hit while Herbert Hoover was in office. He thought just 4 like Reagan thinks now. If anything t is wrong, they blame it on the said council member Lou ) people, But as unemployment Torres. ; began to grow, it began to hit the skilled workers, too. Then we began to get some sympathy. ! There are several parallels be- -. ( tween the early 1930s and the 1980s, such as the growing unemployment, and a large number of people ; renting, members agreed. ; However, there are also major said member Pete differences, ' Houston. Now you have welfare and Social ; I Security. You had rocking chair money. That wasnt given to us because your senator in Washington felt sorry for you. We fought damned hard for every penny," Mr. Houston said. He said his union hall had a collection of pick handles and six shooters that social reformists had taken away from groups. anti-refor- m Stand Up, Be Counted When somebody was ordered to leave their apartment, youd get about a dozen husky guys with baseball bats to stop the evictors, he said. Some people burned their houses down when they were evicted. Several council members recalled We their 1930s protest marches. had mass demonstrations. You can write your letter, or petition, or card and they (government leaders or big businessmen) will just brush them off into the waste basket. But when they look out the window and all those people stand up to be counted, it scares the hell out of them, said one member. We have a social service system now, but we see that system being cut more and more. Its slowly turning around to the way it was in the 1930s. Thats what theyre worried about, Mr. Watkins said. He said people interested in the Unemployment Council may contact Crossroads Urban Center Director Jeff Fox. Queried by Utahn sure Special to The Tribune Cal Black, chairman BLANDING of the San Juan County Commission, is opposed to legislation introduced by to compenSen. Orrin Hatch, sate residents of southern Utah who were exposed to radiation in nuclear testing and have since contracted cancer. In a letter to Sen. Hatch, Black said, The part of the proposed legislation to compensate radiation victims that disturbs me, and that I know something about, is uranium miners who supposedly contracted lung cancer by excessive exposure to radon from uranium mining. There is no evidence that any uranium miner ever developed lung cancer from radon gas or anything else in uranium mining. Black said that some 300 miners have died of lung cancer since the testing WAREHOUSE conducted in the 40s and noted that all of them were smokers. He also claims g33 to have personally worked in mines with radon levels 1300 times higher than are currently allowed. He knows of no uranium miner who has died of lung cancer. Black said, Before the taxpayers B are ripped off to pay people who might be suffering primarily from their own personal bad health habits, there should at least be some very simple and basic research done.
