Show E. S. A. NOTES If you want to know why your automobile auto-mobile goes when you turn on the right levers just ask one of the physics siud-ents. siud-ents. The principal of the gas engine as a type of the internal combustion i engine, as well as the simple reciprocating reciproca-ting steam engine, has been discussed the last week. We' can all agree that were gasoline cheaper in comparison with the coal there would be no steam engines in use as they are such wasteful waste-ful fellows. The efficiency of the steam engine is seldon more than 4 per cent while that of the gas engine is as high as 98 per cent. Have you ever thought why fanning cools the face? Whv ether feels cool on the hand? Why windows of an occu pied house freeze over on the inside? Why sawdust keeps ice from melting? j Why a thick glass tumbler, cracks when j hot water is poured into it and a thin I glass will not crack under the same cir-j cir-j cumstances? These are types of the questions we consider everyday. Few people possess the art of making real humor from subjects given for discussion dis-cussion in a phvsics examination, but we have such a genius in our class this year whom we hope may some day rival with Mark Twain. The following is taken from a recent examination paper: What are the laws of the vibration of strings? One law is that the tighter a string is drawn the louder it sounds, or it sounds sharper. When a string is shortened it sounds more flat. Another law is that a short string Will not sound as loud as a long one. Why does a whistle whistle? The reason you can get a sound from a whistle is because, when the air goes in at the spout there is only one place for it to come out, but before coming out it goes around and around until it is forced to sound as other air is coming in at the same time. Thus it sounds. , What is sound? . Sound is some kind of vibration which affects the organ and causes us to hear distinctly. The vibration is an electric motion. Why does middle C on the piano sound different from the same tone sounded on a horn? I It sounds different on the piano because be-cause it is sounded with the hands while on the horn C is sounded with the valves. "JUNIOR NINE" Although we do not wish to appear great in the sight of a giddy world; yet we believe that "truth is the best policy." pol-icy." With such an aim we proceed to give you our real future. Of all the studies of the curriculum, psychology and athletics are the ones most studied by us. By the one study we are taught the benefits nf manual labor; while the other proves to us that mental training balds the cranium; wrecks the body and fills the asylums. Tnis being the case, we are going to put forth real products of education. For through our prophetic glasses are seen Harry and Levi receiving their diplomas as "Broncho Buster Bill." On the street in Castle Dale Vern and Ralph J. peddling nuts and ice cream. Driving an old blind mule is Arnold L. singing, "Any rags, any bones, any bottles to-day." Swinging a pick down in a trench you will see Ward. Fixing stoves and at the same time talking to the misses you will see tinker Carl. By his side is his pal Bryan, ' soldering pots and pans. With an old grind-organ and a chattering chatter-ing monkey will be seen Ralph Y. as he parades the cities of Emery. Toward these ideals we intend to direct all our means and energies. Denver is supposed to deliver the goods when anyone calls for anything at the Physics and Chemistry store room. What could he do when Orah asked him for a little "consecrated" concentrated concentrat-ed sulphuric acid, or when Ros :sKed for a calo-meter calorimter. Ralph Jensen cannot yet understand whv he was told so emphatically that it was wood alcohol in the bottle he received re-ceived for the experiment while Ruth receives a bottle babeled "alcohol." It was a dark mystery where Miss Bird's "clothes" had gone until the Seniors came parading into chapel Thursday morning as the E. S. A. Faculty. Lyman Larsen's interpretation of the principal was not exactly correct but he did fairly well. Ira Mace and Howard Jensen were parents visiting the Academy and extolling it, bringing forth the usual advice "Take advantage of your opportunities." Harvey Mills led the singing. The students were lucky no one was called down for .whispering. By the way Denver was notat all "slow" as Brother Baird. His part could not be mistaken. Elbert Cox gave out the announcements and even Bro. Anderson could see himself. him-self. Ruth had nearly half the girls standing, for pains in Che side. Miss Bird's clothes were a little snugforher but outside of that she took the party of "dignified Miss Bird" very well. Last but not least John Arnold gave two dramatic readings which were loudly loud-ly applauded. John is "some artist" at reading. Now the faculty has "seen them" we may look for improvement. Denver and Guy are two truthful boys they 'fessed up and told Miss Bird they took her clothes. There was a reason (?). The front of the Academy hill is being leveled down bv the patrons of the school. Somet me we may have a 'garden of the gods" up here. |
