the people turned out in goodly numbers despite the inclement weather and the saturday sessions were impregnated with the spirit of real work to such an extent that the fondest anticipations of the stake presidency in fit arranging tor for convention work for the first day of the conference must surety surely have been realized and will continue to be realized through the coming months in the increased efficiency thru out the stake on the part of the olti cias as well as members elder eider david 0 of the quorum of the apostles and patriarch ily rum G smith were the visitors and the instruction which they gave added materially to the benefit and spirit of the meo meetings tines at the saturday saturday morning session all the stake priesthood stake and ward officials met in their monthly work aeeti meeting ng each division going to its respective department after tile the opening exercises which included short addresses by the visiting brethren the priesthood and male members present remained in the auditorium ot of the tabernacle to discuss the program which had been outlined bearing on the work ol of the acting teacher the subjects treated during tile the morning session in their order were why should we teach by elder A B D taylor of willard what should we teach by elder E 11 horsley II and when we should teach by elder jos A west at the conclusion of the presentation of tile the subjects the matter was thrown open for general discussion and those present were invited to participate which many did and in that way valuable points were brought out personal experiences were related by some who had been teachers for many years and the bishops explained some of the difficulties they meet with in getting the teachers to do their duty the visitors expressed their pleasure with the method introduced trod by the stake presidency of making the first sessions of the conference what they really should be working sessions at which every one afe in attendance also in order that they might get the benefits of the discussion to aid them in their work of teaching and ministering to the saints elder J D peters gave a splendid talk on who should teach and what essential qualifications the teacher should possess followed by elder II if B E thomson of the high school faculty who spoke upon the subject how we should teach As in the morning meeting the question was again thrown open for discussion questions were asked and ans answered vered suggestions were offered the visiting brethren taking an active part and then elder T sic kay gave a summary of the work ot of the day naming each point brought out as it appeared to him and then he gave somo some excellent instructions as to how the various problems should be met the teachers were impressed with the fact that they are held responsible pon sible after being called to tho the mill ministry for the well being of the saints elder mckay read from the scriptures to substantiate his claim and he also stated that it Is a serious matter for any man holding the priesthood to refuse to act as a ward teacher when called by tile the bishopric let every man stand in the place to which lie be has been appointed and do his full duty that the blood of the saints may not be upon him during the meeting elders isaac it II and C ellas elias jenelu rendered a duette in a nery cry pleasing manner there were present sunday morning the tabernacle presented an animated picture the building was filled with twelve hundred and seventy four bright happy children young men and women and parents As usual the first hour ol of the meeting was occupied by the sunday schools in rendering a program the opening song was onward christian soldier after which the invocation was wag offered by elder eider victor E madsen the schools then sang there Is a green hill and the sacrament was administered under the direction or of the bishopric of the second ward during the passing of the sacrament organ the schools repeated in concert the passage of scripture found in ezekiel chapter and verses led by elder A L brown the kindergarten department of the first ward school sang very sweetly luth it prevents boys from being honest he related a beautiful and very touching story of the experience of a boy and his sister over in glasgow scotland who mho had been reared in poverty lost their heir mother by the hand band of death and lost their father by the hand of the demon rum how they had followed 1 the counsel of their mother and lived honestly and what it ultimately Lr rought ought to them a comfortable home honored positions in the world and the confidence of all who knew them As elder mckay narrated the incident in his matchless style there was hardly a dry eye in the vast congregation and zhe the moral was so strongly impressed upon poll the hearts of those present that U it Is doubtful if they will ever forget it patriarch smith was the concluding speaker and he too closing song was america and elder joseph F hansen offered the benediction at the afternoon services ces the tabernacle was filled and the vestry had to be brought into use the count showed 1230 present the services commenced by tile the sin singing ing of the soldiers chorus by the tabernacle choir after which elder 1 I E pribble offered the invocation the choir sang lead kindly light and president cicen N stohl presented the general and local officers tor for the approval or disapproval of the people several changes were made in the official roster of the stake elder orson iverson of dear bear viver river city was added to the high council as an alternate and elder jesse IV hoopes aas inas made superintend ent of sunday schools vice J D call released elder call has been laboring in the stake sunday school erin tendency for the past fifteen years and now that he has been elected judge of the first judicial district much of his time will be required out of the city in view of this fact lie he suggested to tile the stake presidency that tie he would gladly step out and advised that he be released it was so decided upon and supt bupt call was given a hearty ote lote of seu and sevena madsen were added to the doard board as members crystal jeppson was sustained as organist tor for the young ladles ladies and daisy madsen was made chorister of the primary organization there were no other changes and the voting on the propositions was unanimous the choir then sang the selection dear to tho the heart of the shepherd and pres L A snow president W C horsley and elder dow browning ot of ogden made brief remarks each speaking his pleasure in working for the salvation of the children of men and each bearing testimony to the divinity of the work the choir sang the anthem hosan I 1 nall nali and patriarch smith was the next speaker lie ile read from section ga ot of the doctrine and covenants relative to the duty of parents to children and urged the saints to be constant in season and out of season in teaching their children correct principles ire he then explained tho the patriarchal order of the priesthood and gave a brief account of the ordination of the patriarchs of tile the church in the last dispensation ile he blessed the people and commended them for their faithfulness elder david 0 mckay was the concluding clu dig speaker and lie he dwelt on tile the subject of sustaining the officers said that the officers were not elevated to the various positions to honor them but to put them in a position to serve the people and by service comes the greatest happiness that any one can call possibly enjoy then as only he can do it elder mckay told a story illustrating the principle of service the story was the experience of billy rugh the crippled newsboy of gary indiana who recently gave his crippled leg in order that the life of a little girl who had been terribly burned might be saved the skin was taken from the leg and grafted on to the body of the burned child and then the limb was amputated billy got along nicely for a few days and appeared to be on the road to recovery when pneumonia developed and he died defore before closing his eyes in death however he called the doctor to his bedside and asked about the little girl then instructed the physician to tell her lie he was I 1 glad he did it iris his last words were well I 1 was pronounced by elder joun joan D peters the meeting sunday evening was under the direction of the mutual improvement pro associations as usual and a very pleasing innovation of the session was the singing by the 11 1 I A male chorus of thirty members director C C jensen took up the work of organizing a male chorus a number of weeks ago selecting a small chorus in each of the city wards with whom lie he labored and taught tile the pieces ID it then they were all brought together and drilled iu in a body the result was most pleasing the conductor and members de deserving serIng a big mead of praise tor for theft work ork it was indeed a striking example of mutual improvement and elicited the praise of the visitors as well as of the home people who listened to their singing sing inc brief were given by president E P horsley and president eliza thomson of the two stake boards and by president ephraim white of the willard association these talks were interspersed with a vocal solo by mrs hortense E ia nelson and a violin solo by 0 C jacobsen patriarch smith and apostle mckay occupied the balance of the time in giving excellent instructions elder mckay illustrating his point by using striking comparisons pari sons of ocean liners at sea going full steam ahead and others with their rudder broken or machinery disabled I 1 I 1 drifting without definite de finate purpose he I 1 applied the frustration to the lives of young men and women the sailors being baing those who have a definite de finate purpose in life the drifters those who are content I 1 to let each day come slid
