The sugar company has already declared its willingness to build a factory as they are well satisfied satis-fied with the experiments conducted throughout both counties. While the beet crops in.the northern part of Utah and in Idaho were injured by the recent frost, the small patches planted in Ernery and Carbon counties are looking fine with no signs of injury. Mr. T. R. Cutler, vice-president and general manager of the Utah-Idaho ugarCo., is now in the east and statistics statis-tics relatives to the resources of Emery county, together with the vast acreage pledged to the growing of beets, will be presented to the head officials , of the Denver & Rj0 Grande Co. when the stockholders of that company hold their annual meeting in about 10 days. We 'H likely have .word of the success of tatse negotiations within the next two 'eeka. fne 7486 acres represent the united efforts of the 770 boosters of Emery Jr'd Carbon counties who have got in a-d coutributed toward the bringing of railroad, or an average of a little ndcr 10 acres to each prospective Sfower of beets. The Progress has bti accused many times of building Pper railroads but here was an opportunity oppor-tunity for good hard work in the build-lng build-lng of the proposed road-work that almost al-most every farmer, business and pro- tsciorial man in the two counties has Joined in, rewarding in full the efforts of "ose who started the ball rolling some ten eeks ago. The figures show that 'Very family in the section is vitally instated in-stated in the move, and this is what ,e Promoters of any legitimate industry indus-try desires. A thousand acres of beets were secured sec-ured after the Progress went to press st week, the people in every town Allying to the support of the committee 0 hav worked ceaselessly for che rough success of this big proposition. M what is best of all, this campaign a8 seemed to instill new life into Eme-1 Eme-1 county. Many farmers are now Plowing their land with the intention surnmer-fallowing and are going at lI!eir wrk with a zest and hearty earn-tness earn-tness that has never before been witnessed. wit-nessed. Last Sunday night members of the committee made their second trip to Wellington where a great deal of enthusiasm en-thusiasm was again stirred up with the j result that that little place now has Price beat nearly a hundred acres. A delightful musical program was given between the beet talks, and, though the meeting was a long one, none seemed seem-ed to tire. Sunnyside, too, has come through wan 55 acres, Lars Chrislensen of Castleddle having secured (.his amount when he made a flying business trip up there last week. Another meeting was held at Elmo on Monday nignt and this busy little town's acreage was increased quite a little bit alter the proposition had been thoroughly explained. The local committee com-mittee had done good work here, nearly I every farmer in the community having j signed up for some acreage. i On Tuesday nignt the final meeting was held at Orangeville ana 160 acres were either signed up anew or increased from former contracts. Tne work of the campaign has fallen entirely upon our own men of the two counties and that the proposition has been a success is due to them. Parley Jensen, tne company's expert, who his been stationed at Price to oversee the experiments beiu conducted in the two counties, was witn tne committee at one of the Huntington meetings and would have been in attendance at other meetings where his presence had been promised had it not been for the fact tnat our farm demonstrator, demon-strator, with wnom he had plan- ' ned to come, each time suffered some difficulty witn nis car or something else and only notified the committee when it was too late to send another car after Mr. Jensen. ' The members of the joint executive committee met at Ferron Wedneseay morning and did what they could In the way of getting up a statement of the resources of the county which was requested re-quested by the company. It was found that little could be done without some of the county records so an adjournment adjourn-ment was taken to Huntington where some of the records' of the county assessor as-sessor were available. It was so late, however, when the committee reached there and everyone was so tired that any further work that night was given up and it was left to the secretary of the committee to get up the required information. In this he was ably assisted as-sisted by County Assessor Grange and Attorney B. W. Dalton and this information, infor-mation, together with the signed contracts con-tracts and other matter will be in Salt Lake by the time this reaches our readers' read-ers' eyes. A complete list of the subscribers to acreage, together with the respective amounts, will be published in an early issue of the Progress as it is our idea that these men and women who have i signed beet contracts are wideawake citizens who should go down in the history his-tory of the county as men and women who, one and all, contributed their share toward placing Emery county where she belongs and helped prove to the world, as is daily proven to us, that she has a right to the name "Empire of Emery." |
