Show Business Firmly Established. (The following is clipped from the Ogden Standard, a Republican newspaper, news-paper, and looks good to us: From New York comes the news that the activity and advance of industrials in-dustrials which has long been conspicuous, con-spicuous, is now extending to the railroads, rail-roads, which are displaying great st." sngth in consequence of increased earnings. The remarkablo annual report re-port of Union Pacific showed the largest earnings in its history, including includ-ing income from investments, or over 15 per cent on stock, against about 11 per cent a year ago. The extraordinary demand for many commodities, the actual scarcity scarci-ty of others, the flood of gold, the federal fed-eral reserve system and the abundance of credit which these last two factors fact-ors provide are giving an irresistable upward impetus to values. New profits pro-fits thus accrued naturally seek investment in-vestment and stimulate new enterprise. enter-prise. It is quite evident, however, that the present movement of abnormal icti-vity icti-vity has not yet run its course. All indications point to unexampled industrial in-dustrial and commercial activity for some months to come. Of course much depends upon the war, the early-discontinuance early-discontinuance of which would force a temporary setback and readjustment Fortunately, present prosperity of the United States is based upon strong foundations, and is not entirely dependent de-pendent upon continuance of the deplorable de-plorable destruction in Europe. At present there are no signs of an early cessation of the war, and the best opinion is that it will continue at least until next spring if not longer. The momentum business has gained should carry this country over any setback we may experience at the close of the war. Confidence at present pre-sent is unbounded, money is in a-bundance a-bundance and nothing less than a world's calamity can break down the commercial and industrial prosperity prosperi-ty of the United States. |
