Show I Turning Over a I New Leaf i By- LAURA JEAN LIBBEY (Copyrignt. by the McClure Newspaper Syndicate.) Breathes there a man with soul so dead who never to himself hath said : "I'm going to turn over a new leaf this year! I'll cut loose from the crowd of fellows I cannot get away from when I have plenty of money, but who get out of my way when they know I'm broke. I'll cut down my cigar bill one-half. It cuts my pride to see my cigar dealer whisk by in his fine automobile, I trudging trudg-ing along on foot. The same resolution shall hold good in regard to my tailor, who lives in a fine house of his own, I in a boarding house. I'll let others help to finance him this year. I'll chum with a different set of men, choosing young comrades who insist upon paying pay-ing their share of the way. Instead of men older and more canny than I. who never pay out a cent from their own pocket, but make my friendship for them their support. "As for the girls (God bless them!) instead of avoiding them I'll turn over a new leaf by picking out a nice girl to woo and wed. I find the longer a man puts off marrying the more he'll rue it. Life Is unsatisfactory nd Incomplete In-complete to a man who hasn't ciie love of some good, noble woman, who loves, trusts, looks up to him, and has his welfare at heart. I'll stick closer to business and see how much I can save instead of how much I can spend. I'll start by taking water instead of wine; by shaking dimes in my pocket, which are to stay there, instead of shaking dice. I'll make a firm resolve that nothing shall break to write at least one letter a week to my dear old mother, moth-er, whose anxious thoughts and prayers pray-ers are always following me, as well is her motherly tear-stained missives, egging for just a word fcora me now ind then. I'll make my old father proud )f me. I'll cut out costly dinners at restaurants, just to seo and be seen. The little cafe 'round the corner where he food is good and costs much less vlll do me." Jt's the best thing a man could do to make such wise resolutions. The point is, will he stick to them, turning over a new leaf which he would never be sorry for? If he does not backslide, the year will be full of promise for lilm. He will be successful in business and in love. By the time the next year rolls around he will probably not be a bachelor, but will have a sweet and gracious bride by his side, who will help him keep his pledges and make his life and home happy. The man who has the grit to do this will lay the foundation of happiness for life. |
