Show ARMISTICE NOT ASKEDBY BERLIN EXPECT PARLEYS TO BE HELD AT THE HAGUE ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY. But It is Not Expected That Military Operations Will Cease at Once in Event Belligerents Agree to Peace Parley. London. Telegraphing from Copenhagen, Copen-hagen, the correspondent of the Exchange Ex-change Telegraph company quotes the Frankfurter Zeitung as saying: "Germany does not want a cessation cessa-tion of fighting, but merely a conference confer-ence at -which the belligerents shall openly state their peace proposals. "A conference will be held at The Hague about January 15. While the oonference is In session, all the belligerents bellig-erents will be allowed to continue military operations." The Frankfurter Zeitung continues: "Germany must try to prevent the entente from giving an evasive answer. an-swer. We expect a wide cleavage of views at the outset of the negotiations, but great apparent divergence of opinion opin-ion will have less significance when the oral explanations are offered. The standpoints of both parties are already al-ready partly identical as regards the general fundamental aims of the war, and the German note must be understood under-stood as meaning that part of the German Ger-man proposals refer to the re-establishment of international conventions for the avoidance of international conflicts con-flicts and guarantees of international peace." Referring to the possibility of al levlting the burden of armaments the Zeitung expresses the belief that an agreement to this effect is possible, owing to the sufferings caused by war, and adds: "But Germany must not be asked to precede the others in reducing her forces. Moreover, Germany does not believe in abrogating general military mili-tary service, although there are many objections against such. It would be abrogated if there were a common organization or-ganization of nations in which Germany Ger-many would have an important place." |
