Show SERGENAT BASIL LAKE LIKES MOTORS NOT The prospective change from horses to motors in drawing the guns of the 30th Field Artillery (at Camp Dix, iNew Jersey) is probably pleasing to every man in that regiment with the i exception of Sergeant Basii Lake, of : Battery B. The sergeant comes from Utah, where he holds a state record as bronco buster and he carries two championship medals won in "roundups." "round-ups." Lake quit the cowboy game to join the regular army when it looked like a chance for excitement in France. Instead of going to Europe at once, however, the unit of the regulars he joined was sent to Camp Dix to help form a skeleton organization for the big army to be built here. The sergeant didn't mind the delay with the prospect of commanding a horse-drawn horse-drawn gun going into action with a dash and roar, but he is downhearted :at the thoifght of having to "saddle" a motor. "How in the heck is a man going to bridle a carbureter?" he asked today. "What in Sam Hill can you do when the motor stops? Cussin' and other means can move a balky horse, but when it comes to talking to a balky engine good night!" Philadelphia Phila-delphia Press. |
