Big, booming Bella Abzug and her National Commission have gone t. great lengths to muzzle all feminist opposithn to their hard-lin-e platlorm. And the results have been and high emodivisions, name-callin- g tion among members of the fairer sex. Nobody has felt the sting of this more than the elected members of the IWY Utah delegation. Bella has implied in national news conferences that they are "subversives planmng to "disrupt her conference. Linked With KKK Locals of her feather have called them "deceitful and tried to discredit-theby linking them with the Ku Klux Man. What a pity. The finest thing about our coun- '' ' try has been the m ' toleration of point of II view, the right to what one i4?Ljj express feels without J worry of conse- quence. But thats not the case with this womens confer- -' ' Ward ence. What was supposed to be planned as an open forum for discussion of womens issues and a chance for women to work together to overcome discrimination under the law is quickly becoming an exercise in pure power politics. Called Dirty Names , If we dont agree with you, we wiL squash you and call you dirty names. Anything to discredit the opposition. That seems to be the message from Bella and her cohorts. Is that democracy? Hardly. The conference was set up under public law and funded by $5 million of government money. Its purpose is to draft political resolutions designed to be a blueprint for national government policy. Fair enough. Problems erupted from the beginning, though. The national commission is dominated by feminists who champion a political agenda including abortion, lesbian rights, federal day care centers for working mommas, quotas for women in private and public jobs, and confidential contraceptive counselall this in the name ing for teen-ageof equal rights. Equal Rights Stop But thats where the equal rights slopped. As national commentator, James J. Kilpatrick, said in the September issue of Nations Business, The general idea was for the national commission to appoint state commissions that would go dutifully down the line for ERA and all the rest. These state commissions were expected to name nominating committees that would produce right thinking slates for a rubber-stam- p election, and the rules contained some ingenious parliament ary safeguards intended to make dissension and insurrection ever so difficult. For states like Utah where women amended the rules and elected a body of delegates not of the extremist stamp, there was yet another fix. j ' - rs Bought By Utah On Medicare low-biddin- 1978-mod- el and Conlactti l. hoard mambar, ArcMtacta; and Mica Ontttm, Laaaaa at Wdiwdn Vatara at Utatl. The presumption or prescience here is overwhelming, for how can any group of people far removed from individual voting booths, presume to improve on the judgment of the people in choosing their own representatives? Consider the consequences if all other elective bodies were balanced by appointment after the elective process is completed; after the neople have spoken. Where then wouhl representative government go? Views of the Few at-lar- Unfortunately, after studying the materials, procedures and platform of the National IWY Commission, I have come to believe that it is no more than a d government-fundelobby working to convince Congress that the views of the few are the views of us all. Though the law specifically states that no funds authorized for the conference can be used for lobby activities, the express purpose of the commission quoted here from their handbook To Form a More Perfect Union is reproductive freedom as well as responsible choice . . . passage of the all these Equal Rights Amendment and many more are part of the dream. Predetermined Ends How can the IWY National Commission justify its own existence when its stated purpose is to influence state, national and local government and organizations toward such predetermined ends? If this is not lobbying what lobbying with our tax dollars is? The commission in the same handbook recommended adoption by state conferences of over 100 resolutions with only a single side of each issue presented. Thus, at statewide conferences, the issues of most concern to women were defined and confined for them and they were expected to vote for or against them without amendment. Determine Platform 'When Houston comes, the nationa commission, having appointed all conference officials, arranged for the speakers, determined the platform (blithely dismissing minority resolutions by many states such as Utah) and stacking the credentials and rules will be in absolute committee command. The upshot of this is a sorry mess for all of us no matter where we stand in the struggle for womens rights. I am for advancement of the status of women; I am for enhancing our opportunities, but I am sick at heart that this Houston conference has been ruined by the strongarm tactics of its d planners. $5,641 each, or a total of $564,151 for the purchase. Called Your Medicare Recordkeeper, the folder provides Medicare beneficiaries with a single, convenient place to keep their Medicare records. Enclosed with each folder are copies of the Medicare Medical Insurance Claims Record which beneficiaries can use to keep a list of the claims they have submitted. Recent reports from Medicare carriers and intermediaries have shown a growing number of claims and forms submitted by Medicare beneficiaries are either incomplete, or lack sufficient Mr. Mortimeyer said. The infordocumentation, mation in this folder should help those people in filling out their forms and claims. And by having the information on hand, they should have a better idea of when to submit their claims.
