Show FOOD CONSERVATION DAYS ARE DESIGNATED Two wheatless days each wttk, Xwo oorkless days, one meatless day and one meatless meal dally Is the new food conservation program outlined for housekeepers in 1918 by the food Hdmlnistration. W. "W. Armstrong, federal food administrator Jor Utah has duly Issued a proclamation applying ap-plying to this state. Mondays and Wednesdays kave been designated as wheatless; Tuesdays Tues-days and Saturdays as porkless, and Tuesdays as entirely meatless. In addition ad-dition to this, the patriotic men and women of Utah are urged to abstain from meat at least one meal a day and to buy or make only Victory bread. This program is outlined in the netr home cards for 1918 and apply nationally. In his proclamation. State Food Administrator Armstrong s.iid : "When the call came we willingly gave our sons to the great struggle, Jfow comes another call; one that we, und we only, can answer. We have been asked before and we have responded res-ponded nobly. Now, however, we are are asked not only to save, but to save more, in order that the black day on which we might be forced to go without, may be put back on the terrible ter-rible calender of war. "But more than that we are asked to save so that our boys on the battlefields battle-fields may be, not Just supported, but kept alive for the next six months, for upon them and us depends the outcome out-come of the war." In concluding the proclamation Mr. Armstrong states. "And it all means conservation, saving, self-denial, sacrifice, sac-rifice, grim and determined. Not for our neighbors, but for ourselves, for unless we translate at once our savings sav-ings of wheat, beef and pork into shells, ships, and soldiers, we cannot hope to win this war. The duties outlined In the new conservation con-servation program for this year, as given by Mr. Armstrong, are as follows: fol-lows: First To buy or make only Victory bread. Victory bread Is from 5 to 20 per cent of other cereals mixed with white flour, graham or whole wheat. Second To observe strictly the wheatless days, the meatless days and the porkless days. Wheatless days are Mondays and Wednesdays, with one wheatless meal daily, preferably the evening meal. Third Wheatless means no crackers, crack-ers, pastries, macaroni, breakfast food or cereals containing flour. Exceptions: Excep-tions: Flour for thickening gravies, or as a binder in cornmeal or other cereal breads. Fourth Meatless days, Tuesdays, also one meatless meal daily. Meatless means no hog, no cattle, no sheep. Meatless allows fish, poultry, eggs. Fifth Porkless days, Tuesdays and 8aturdays. Porkless means no bacon, no pork, no ham, lard or pork products pro-ducts either fresh or preserved. On other days use mutton or lamb In preference to beef or pork. |
