Show PRESIDENT CALLS ON TEACHERS FOR HELP President Wilson makes a call upon school teachers for voluntary aid in making out an extensive card index of all registrants under the present pres-ent selective military draft. While the appeal of the President is addressed ad-dressed to teachers it is. equally applicable ap-plicable to other persons similarly qualified. The work of indexing this man-power will be begun within a week or ten days. Complete instructions instruc-tions as to the details of the work will be furnished each local board within the next few days and will be available for the use of teachers and other volunteers. President Wilson's call follows: The success of the selective service ser-vice system has been largly due , to the reliance that has been ' placed on the co-operation of all citizens in its execution. In the registration, the election officers of the several states were called upon to perform a specific task and they performed it unanimously unanimous-ly and efficiently. Latterly, I have had occasion to call the lawyers law-yers and the physiians of the country to specific duties and they i have responded in a solid rank. The time has now come when the teachers of the country can perform per-form a very necessary task and I have no doubt that they will respond res-pond in the same manner. The process of classification of allmen within the field of selection selec-tion is proceeding rapidly. It becomes necessary to carry forward for-ward with this process the making mak-ing of a very complete index, which shall accurately locate any specially qualified man among the ten millions on our enrollment lists. The local boards are so overburdened with the work of classification 'that this task cannot can-not be put upon them, and yet the necessities of the nation require re-quire that it be performed with the greatest possible dispatch and accuracy. This duty can be performed best by the teachers of the various communities. Under authority conferred upon me by the selective service law, I therefore there-fore call upon all teachers to present pre-sent themselves to local boards having jurisdiction over the areas in which they reside, for the purpose pur-pose of examining questionnaires and filling out the index cards in accordance with more specific instructions in-structions to be issued by the provost pro-vost marshal general. |
