Just a little ways down the road is Durango, Colorado, the principle depot for the Silverton Train, and the other part of the Denver to Silverton line that is still in operation. Here passengers board the train for a three and a half hour ride to Silverton. With a hiss of steam, this legendary train takes its adventurers into another century, where they will relive the frontier days of railroading in the Rockies. Riding in gondola car, a gently rocking coach or an open-ai- r million-acr- e San passengers will roll through the two Juan National Forest, where they may see deer and elk, or some of the other 70 different kinds of animals, as well as 140 species of wild grass and 300 different flowering plants. on track that was laid in 1882, TRAVELING passengers will see remnants of old mining camps, coach stops and rocks in the valley that are between 90 and 230 million years old. Established in the early 1800s as an old mining town, today Silverton is a small, silver mining community. There is plenty of time to stop for lunch, do some shopping, visit the museum run by the Historical Society, tracing the history of the area, or just stroll around town before boarding the train for the return trip to Durango. Passengers may travel back the same route via the train, or go by bus. Once the return trip is made, there are many interesting arts and crafts shops and restaurants, as well as historical buildings to visit in Durango. Again, it is wise to reserve space on the train andor bus by writing to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, Narrow Guage Depot, 479 Main Avenue, Durango, Colorado 81301. Only a short drive from both the CATS and the Silverton trains are other historic and exciting attractions in the area. FOR THOSE interested in seeing Indian ruins and dramatic cliff dwellings there is Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, and the Taos Pueblos, New Mexico. A short distance from Taos is the old and romantic city of Santa Fe. Tourists may want to visit the Sand Dunes National Monument and Fort Garland, which is a restored frontier calvary post in Colorado. There are tours by bus to many of these daily, attractions from Durango. For those who want to spend several days in this beautiful part of the country, there is ample lodging, as well as campgrounds.
