Show Up Coal Reserves: Alaskas Huge O A Threat to Mining; in Utah? v7 ALASKA Robert Woody Tribune Business Editor On Friday the states of California and Alaska announced a joint effort of the energy agencies to size up Alaska coal reserves. By BELUGA COAL PRESERVES ANCHORAGE and Down tin Street . While the - CANADA Already, weslem coal is being headed off at the pass for use in eastern power plants by eastern coal operators and miners After all, it was they who pressured the President to require scrubbers on all power plants thus canceling out the advantage of low sulfur western coal in the East. And so, western coal looks to the Southwest and Northwest to meet the needs of California, Oregon and Washington. But what's this? Alaska Coal Reserves Alaska has enormous coal reserves. And just off Cook Inlet 40 miles west of Anchorage lies the Beluga coal field with about 2.5 billion tons of reserves mostly on state lands. Suppose, just suppose, the Beluga coal can be mined economically and transported by ship or barge to the West Coast. Better Economics? Might not the economics of ocean shipment 1,500 to 2,500 miles to West Coast installations be better than that for hauling Rocky Mountain coal 700 miles or so to coastal power plants? Don't knock the economics of ship transport. After all, that's what the Japanese claim gives them such advantage in getting their steel and cars into the American market. PACIFIC OCEAN The West Coast utilities are heavy into hydro and oil and gas generation Rut the hydro sites are nearly exhausted. And President Carter has told the oil and gas burners to start burning coal as quicky as possible. Shipment of Alaskan coal to West Coast power plants casts a shadow over market opportunities for Rocky Mountain coal. Outcome could depend on coastal or inland location of plants. Inquiries Triple Russell Schaff, director of Alaskas Division of Geological and Geophysical Survey, told The Tribune that the rate of query about Alaskas coal has quadrupled in six months. Two weeks ago, Juneau Alaskas was the site of a major coal capital conference attended by 200 persons from throughout the nation. Alaska has only small coal producsome 750,000 tons a year tion now from the Yesebelli coal mine, which goes for power production in Fairbanks 100 miles distant. Thats about one tenth of current Utah production. But it claims about 150 billion tons of coal on the North Slope. And in the south, it reckons its Beluga reserves principally on state lands at about 2.4 billion tons. Stripable Reserves Don McGee, petroleum and coal geologist for Alaskas survey (and a 1955 graduate of the University of Utah) says the stripable reserves at Beluga are estimated at between 400 and 800 million tons. The Beluga coals are not much on BTU content ranging from 7,100 to 8,500 a pound, or about two- - thirds that of western coal. But they have exceedingly low sulfur content, ranging be- tween .2 and .3 per cent compared to one or more per cent for Utah coals and upwards of 6 per cent for eastern coals. Puget Sound Power & Light Co. president J. W. Ellis says his firm has been studying use of Alaskan coal for two years. far. the economics have not looked right. If the coal has to be shipped by rail to the Alaska coast, transferred to barges to port in Washington, then retransferred to tram for delivery to an inland site, the ocean transport advantage has been cancelled out After we complete our However. two (7()0 megawatt) mine mouth plants at Coalstnp, Mont , we would rather not ship coal all the way to our area by rail if we can get a better supply for a local power station. Alaska coal will make it if it's there (commercially mineable) and we can can get it here.
