But if a man (or woman' bites another human, you had better call a doctor. We average one or two human bite wounds a day here at University Medical Center emergency room, says Dr. Allen Riter, a general surgery resident working the emergency room shift. Human bites can be terribly dangerous if they arent treated promptly. The dangers of animal bites are well known, but few people realize that a mans mouth has as much bacteria, though of a different kind, than a dogs. All dog bites, even when your own dog bites you, must be reported to the police department or the sheriffs office. The police then check to see if the dogs shots are current. But human bites are seldom reported. Biting Isn't Funny Any mother who has a child who bites knows what true humiliation is. There is nothing you can do or say when ou see the tell-tal- e know Charlies teeth marks. (Id teeth prints anywhere," an exasperated mother sighed.) But whatever you do, dont be tempted to bite the child back. Regardless of the psychological aspects, human bites arent scratch your hand, its a "bite." If someone hits you and your ow n teeth go through your lip or your cheek, its a bite " funny. We Most injuries occur during fights with an equal number of men and women suffering bite wounds. dont worry much about people having rabies when they bite someone, but many times a human bite is much worse than a dogs bite , says Tim Roose, a registered nurse at St. Mark's Hospital emergency room. With dog bites, the canine teeth are sharp and it's a piercing, tearing bite. A human bite mashes the tissue and actually causes more damage. Most people wait until the bite starts to give them trouble before asking for medical help. This can lead to real problems. A bite on the hand is particularly troublesome, Dr. Riter said. Your hands are very important. An untreated bite can lead to complications to the joints, hones, systemic infections, permanent stiffness, loss of function and even amputation. You dont actually have to have been bitten to suffer a bite wound If you hit someone with your fist and his teeth Olds better in jewelry often better it comes to is Old when jewelry. He added that in a minor wound you wouldnt need a tetanus shot if ou had had one in the past throe to five years. In a "serious wound" they would give a tetanus shot. All wounds are cleaned under sterile conditions and many call for antibiotics. If the bite is really sex ere. the patient is hospitalized. A great majority of bite wound cases are turned over to a family doctor to follow. Both Dr. Riter and Mr. Roose agree that have a child who bites, biting him back isnt a good idea. if you Surprisingly, I've seen very few child bites here in the emergency room," Dr. Riter said, (in a survey conducted at the University of Miami Hospital, Fla., about human vites, there were no child bites reported and no dentsits bitten, either.)
