Show Beet Sugar Factory Postponed for Year Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Not Able- to Build Branch Line Through Emery County for 1917 Crop. The Denver & Rio Grande not being be-ing able to give definite assurance that .1 branch railroad can be constructed lo Emery in time to handle a 1917 sugar su-gar beet crop, the idea of going into the sugar beet industry next year, will, of necessity have to be postponed for a year, or until 1918, when officials of the D. & R. G. have expressed themselves as being confident that such a branch road will be constructed. construct-ed. It will be remembered that over 7000 acres were pledged to the growing grow-ing of sugar beets for the years 1917-18-19 in Emery and Carbon counties, when the committee composed of men appointed from towns in both counties coun-ties practically honey-combed both of the counties in their efforts to raise the required acreage, being sucessful, finally, in securing more than the amount required. The contracts were submitted to the sugar company, a-long a-long with other required statistical information, in-formation, and the whole project has been hanging fire since that time, with the factory assured if the railroad would come through with a branch line. Rumors and counter-rumors as to the sugar factory and railroad have repeatedly made their appearance in one of the Salt Lake dailies and have been readily gobbled up by some of our contemporaries. We thought we were just about sure of their source and so refrained from tormenting our readers with such visionary stuff, and have been glad many times since that we did not reproduce the trash. But the letter reproduced below, coming from the authority it does, awakens fresh confidence in the idea that our railroad and sugar factory, with the consequent era of prosperity in Emery county, will yet become a fact, and before be-fore many more months. Men in Mr. Rockwell's position do not "hope" or "believe" a railroad will be constructed construct-ed without having reasonable confidence con-fidence of realization. Eastern U-tah U-tah is about the only section of the state where the sugar beet industry has not been established and our unrivalled un-rivalled advantages for beet culture cannot much longer be ignored. Letter on Subject The letter, which is from M. Geo. Austin, follows: Utah-Idaho Sugar Co., Salt Lake City, Utah, 'Nov. 29, 1916. Mr. David S. Williams, secretary. Beet Growers Committee, Castle Dale, Utah. Dear Sir: We have been working constantly with the officials of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway for the last five or six months in the endeavor to get them to build a railroad into Emery in time for us to construct a beet sugar sug-ar factory in 1917. We are just in receipt of a letter from Mr. Rockwell of the D. & R. G., informing us that he is afraid the railroad rail-road will not be constructed in time to handle the business for 1917, but that negotiations are still pending and hopes and believes that the railroad will be built in time to handle the proposition in 1818. This company, you may rest assured, will do everything every-thing in its power to further this proposition. prop-osition. The reason for our delay in notifying notify-ing you is that we had hoped to receive re-ceive a favorable report from the railroad company long before this. We think it would be well to continue con-tinue experiments along the line of sugar beet raising in Emery and Carbon Car-bon counties, and to grow a fairly large acreage of beets there next season, seas-on, so that when the factory is assured the farmers will have some experience in the work that is necessary for successful suc-cessful beet growing. The farmers would lose nothing by raising quite a lot of beets and feeding them to their sheep, cattle and hogs, as sugar beets make excellent feed for fattening purposes. pur-poses. We shall co-operate with your people peo-ple next year along experimental lines so that we will be prepared, when the time comes, to make a thorough success suc-cess of the sugar beet business. There is no doubt In the writer's mind that a beet sugar factory will be built in Emery county In 1918, provided, pro-vided, of course, that the railroad la constructed. Yours very truly, UTAH-IDAHO SUGAR CO. By George Austin, Gen'l Agriculturist |
