Show PREPARING WAY FOR PEACE. Believed That Germany is Willing to Listen to Peace Proposals. Washington. The message from Pope Benedict to President Wilson, it was learned authoritatively Sunday, makes it clear that the German emperor em-peror and the Vatican have an understanding under-standing on the subject of peace. The pope was informed by direction of thwemperor, it was declared, that Germany is willing to treat for peace or to listen to proposals with peace as their object. Pope Benedict, it was declared, has been approached by the Austro-Hun-garian government with peace representations repre-sentations and has received from Emperor Em-peror Francis Joseph tangible propositions propo-sitions which would warrant him in seeking the services of the United States in the interest of peace. Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore, Balti-more, recognized head of the Catholic Catho-lic church in America, said Sunday, in a statement to the International News service, he knew "there is something in the air." He expressed the hope that it would come to a successful termination. |
