Show Slack Management. Samuel Ilea, ex-president of the Pennsylvania railroad, told a railroad story at a dinner in Philadelphia: "It's a very ill-managed road," he said. "Once, on its 'Hying bullet' express, ex-press, a dreadful storm came up, and the express stopped for the night at Muggs Siding. " 'Conductor,' said a traveler, genially, genial-ly, 'we're going to be late.' " 'No, we hain't goin' to be late, nu-ther," nu-ther," snarled the conductor. " 'But I thought we were going to tie up here all night?' " 'Well, so we are,' the conductor admitted, ad-mitted, 'hut that ain't goin' to make us late. We don't run so close to time as all that.' " |
