| Show T") The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday October All 13 1990 Poor Should Bless Bush for Not Raising Taxes of Wealthy Chicago Tribune Service President Bush is being unfairly rapped for his refusal to go along with congressmen who want to raise the taxes of the wealthy But by backing away from the proposed tax hike he has shown himself to be both compassionate and politically astute Unlike Congress Bush senses that soaking the rich would unleash a furious political backlash We would turn on our TV sets and see hordes of angry ladies in mink coats leaping from their Line° Ins and Cadillacs to picket the White House The letters pages of newspapers would be filled with outbursts from readers saying things like: "President Bush has betrayed every wealthy family in America By raising our taxes he has made sure Mike Royko 4yyAmmommosammul t : that this will indeed be a cold and bleak Christmas for my immigrant cleaning lady since I will now have to cut her from five to four days a week and omit her holiday bonus Wake up America's rich! Do you want to scrub your own floor?" The timing for such a tax proposal could not be worse as Bush surely recognized This is the season when most country clubs hold their annual membership meetings And in clubhouses across the nation men would ing to make ends meet So as Dr LK Kookie the noted expert on a lot of stuff has said: "The ends will never meet so they might as well keep stretching It's good exercise" On the other hand by taxing the rich you run the risk of making them not rich anymore It was put most succinctly by the valet in a movie called "A New Leaf" His rich employer squandered his fortune and he wondered what would become of him The valet said: "You will be poor in the only true sense of the word You will not be rich" So if the rich aren't rich anymore they will be poor And how can we go on taking pride in being the richest most powerful country in the world if our rich people become poor? As it is now we no longer have the world's top moneybags The Japanese have more billionaires than we do So does Europe And even after to only $480000 a year and when I to clean his office he would become grouchy and not say hello to me And without that I don't think I could go on I would much rather they find some way to increase my taxes After all I'm already on the cutting edge of being poor and miserable so I might as well go all the way Instead of feeding scraps to my old hound dog I'll get rid of the dog and eat the scraps myself"' Bentback touched on a key economic truth that Bush apparently understands as did Ronald Reagan who cut the taxes of the wealthy while clipping the middle class which didn't seem to mind since they kept voting for him And that economic truth is that no matter what you do to the taxes of those who are stretching to make ends meet they will still be stretch be jumping up and shouting: "Fie upon the motion to repaint the ball washers blue There are more urgent matters at band I say that we the members of the Ye Old Thinn Lipps Country Club send a resolution to Bush condemning his treachery and revoking his standing as a WASP a golfer and a member of our social class The man is nothing more than a Bolshevik in Brooks Brothers clothing" And it isn't only the rich who would be against increasing the tax on the rich by 3 or 4 percent Take Bill Bentback who has swept floors and emptied wastebaskets in the same factory for 35 years When asked about the proposed tax hike be said: ' "No it would be a terrible thing to do The spendable income of the man who owns this factory would shrink go in being kicked out of their palaces the homeless Kuwaitis have more billions stashed than Donald Trump ever dreamed of Do we want all of them pointing at us and laughing and saying: "Nyah nyah we're rich and : ' I you're not so there"? Besides those who aren't rich need role models someone to look up to That's why they read People magazine and watch "Lifestyle'9f — the Rich and Famous" Does Congress think they want to open People and see Madonna wearing an old house dress? Or Bill Cosby putting up storm windows? No George Bush shouldbe praised for his bold and humane stance As old Walt a toothless and grizzled panhandler said to me: PIP he taxes the rich they won't haveV any pocket change to give me and what will happen to my career? Bless that man He's doing it all for me'"1 1 JI onoommoommigi The Public ForulnL Drawn and Quartered -- Tribune Readers' Opinions X-ra- Erasure y had a flight ached- uled out of Terminal A of the Salt Lake International Airport to San Francisco It was a business trip and I had my computer with me This computer has an internal hard drive as well a floppy diskette drive As I passed through the security area I specifically told the attendant that it was a personal computer and I unzipped the case lap-to- p h and showed him I asked if it was OK to run the computer with the hard drive and floppy disk in the carrying machine He case through the y assured me it would be fine and I proceeded to run the computer through When I reached my destination in San Francisco I attempted to power up the computer but encountered a X-ra- My serviceman ''' later informed me will happen My purpose in writing is to warn Tribune readers of the terrible results of running a computer through machine and to publicly the y shame the management of the Salt Lake Airport in not training their employees to know what the hell doing! JOHN K BLACK Monticello Priesthood Point I've never known a man who yearned to be president of Relief Society I've never known a woman who felt deprived because she hadn't been called to lead the Elder's Quorum On the other hand I've known Relief Society presidents to seek and value the carefully considered advice of the priesthood holders in their families — and just as many men holding priesthood positions who have sought and valued a discussion of priesthood problems with the women in their lives So which one does that make inferior? And how did James Chapman (Common Carrier Sept 2) win insight into the reasoning powers of the Almighty? Isn't it possible that man being perhaps a little less humble may be a little less teachable possibly even a little less spiritual than woman needs some added power to equalize the union? Quite aside from the question of equality is the question of responsibility There is no way for a man to share the pain weariness and discomfort of childbearing even though he shares quite happily in the Why then joys of parenthood should a woman complain she is spared the weight of responsibility that comes with bearing the priesthood while sharing equally in its blessings? I've never known a Mormon male or female to express a "belief in the as depeninferiority of women dent incapable of complex thought with which to meet the severe challenge of the larger world — deficient in qualities of major leadership of men" With such a community attitude how are we to explain the recent election of a female to an important political position in opposition n to a popular experienced and highly competent male opponent? Is it possible that God thought it fitting and proper to place some sort of rein on the male at the age of say 12 to hold him steady through the admitted difficult teens? Orrin Hatch" Sept 17) seemingly based solely on Mr Sokoe advertisement (Sept lof's 12) is not only inaccurate but also unfair to Sen Hatch comg The senator's mitment to ensuring that food safety decisions and food labeling information be based on modern principles of science and nutrition is a matter of record In 1983 as chairman of the Labor and Human Resources Committee he conducted the most extensive hearings on food safety law in the last 30 years He has worked with the current committee chairman Sen Edward Kennedy to modernize this nation's food safety laws He introduced his own mandatory nutrition labeling bill S 1505 in this Congress and has worked tirelessly to negotiate a rational uniform labeling bill built on a foundation of science and nutrition Neither Mr Sokolof's ad nor The Tribune's editorial mention that the bill that passed the US House of g Representatives under a debate is a product of a classic Washington "back room" deal This version has not been the subject of congressional hearings is a blatant attempt to substitute the lay opinion of a few politicians for the expertise of the Food and Drug Administration and addresses the important issues of in an inconsistent manner Sen Hatch recogFortunately nizes the flaws in this bill and is working to inject some common sense into this complex issue Mr Sokolof's characterization of FDA's pending proposed regulations of nutrition labeling health claims and descriptors and serving sizes as "weak" is inaccurate and premature at best Food labeling legislation and regulations must be uniform and or move smartly toward the goal the Arab states never abandoned — the destruction of Israel One after another representatives of butcher regimes around the world wept for human rights It was an insult to all who died on their execution blocks But all the excellencies knew what had really happened in Jerusalem though they talked past the truth or lied They knew that Saddam Hussein and the Palestine Liberation Organization had set a trap in Jerusalem baited with human lives The outrageously small detachment of Israeli police on hand in panic and stupidity rushed right into it They killed a II i Israeli-Ara- b score of the thousands of Palestinians carrying out their assigned role in the trap: to stone Israelis worshiping below at the wall where over the millennia Jews have come to pray and remember The delegates also knew that had set a more deadly Baghdad-PLsecond trap for the US And in panic and stupidity the United States was rushing into it This trap was to get the United States to equate the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait with the Israeli conquest of the West Bank in 1967 and to connect them for settlement during or after the confrontation with Iraq That "linkage is one of the many Arab propaganda myths put forward as Middle Eastern reality The West Bank was to be part of the Palestinian state foreseen under a 1947 UN partition plan The Palestinians and the Arab states rejected the plan and the very idea of an 4"0"q1k0ytAlyA6400Orn41411400tWaoll410&11OaAwal040!fl41010At&46O400A114146c0st41L100444x4&0 Dilemma Israeli state a continuing rejection that has made peace impossible In 1948 Jordan joined the Arab attack against the newborn Israel Jordan was a political fiction It was invented by Britain which carved it out of Palestinian territory on the East Bank of the Jordan River in the 19208 and enthroned a foreign Arab family Jordan invaded occupied and annexed the West Bank and East Jerusalem That put the heart of Israel a rifle shot away from Arab power In 1967 Jordan again joined the other Arabs in attacking Israel King Hussein never has had the courage or wisdom to pick a winner He was trounced losing the West Bank and East Jerusalem to Israel Someday there will be a settlement giving Palestinians a real voice on the West Bank But there is only one connection between Israel and Ku wait: both were invaded by Arabs And there's one difference Kuwait's government ran and lost The Israelis stood fought and won When the Jerusalem trap was sprung enough Israeli policemen should have been on hand to deal with the thousands of without having to shoot their way out Israel is paying dearly for that stone-throwe- rs error President Bush and the State De-partment fear understandably that the Arab countries may cut and run from the coalition But neither Israeli nor US leaders get paid to panic Given the will there is time to heal the hurt between the two countries But if the United States continues to submit to Arab pressures the coalition against Iraq will turn into a coalition against Israel Win or lose: dead or alive Saddam will have triumphed He will be there in that council chamber and how he will laugh 1 |
