Show 3i44kila-ftt''kV- ' S I I 8D The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday June 24 1990 Golfer I Iandicapped By Huge Hangover Seniors Share Courses After Spawning Golf Explosion In the last two months I've had the opportunity to prowl around most of our golf courses in the northern and central parts of our state and two things really impressed me: 1) The number of golfers and 2) The number of senior golfers It is fun to watch the young golfers but it is heartwarming to see the veterans out there in such high numbers are the men and woThe men who have popularized golf They were playing when Salt Lake City's municipal courses numbered three: Nib ley Park Forest Dale and I : 1 Bonneville Only a few of them wereare tourna- golfers The vast majorthe game for the love play simply ity of the game itself And that love has never grown cold While this isn't the only reason for the golf explosion across our country it is one of the reasons A vast number of the young people taking up golf today inherited a desire to play from their fathers or mothers whose desire to play came from their mothers and fathers Yeah if our courses are overcrowded — and they are — lay the blame on the senior golfers But not because they are taking up all the space on the courses they aren't But because they have given their offspring and their offspring's offspring a tradition of playing the game for fun not wealth The USGA and the PGA set the minimum age for senior golfers at 50 and that's fair enough although most of the golfers I'm talking about are 60 and over These are the real ment-type old-time- I'm bringing this up at this time be- cause of a letter I received from Dale W Barratt of St George Barratt dropped me a note in response to my request back in May for news of golfers who have scored more than one e e or whose was scored in unusual circumstances Barratt included a news story from the St George Spectrum that noted e he had scored the first ever on the new Green Spring Golf Course there last December and then repeated that performance on Jan30 giving him two of the first three aces scored on that beautiful golf course and giving him a lifetime total to date hole-in-on- Todd Barker of Taylorsville ran in Barker and Young finished regulation play tied with par 68s After parring the first two holes both hit the green in two on No3 Barker rolled in his putt for an eagle and Young missed his putt Meanwhile BYU golfer Jason 67 to Thomas carded a lead in the 1990 take the Art City Amateur on the Hobble Creek course in Springville Saturday A stroke back at 68 were Provo veteran Garth Ford and Doug Baxter Jay Lamb Ramon Brobio and John McArthur were tied at 69 Chuck O'Brien Doug Bybee David Summerhays Kurt Bosen and Dean Wilson were at 70 Defending champion Ron Hitchcock of Springville shot a par 71 — Marion Dunn - In addition to the news of his aces Barratt gave me a short history of his long love affair with golf and I'm going to pass it on in the hope you young and old will find it as interesting as I do And also to kick-of- f another search: this one for Utah's Golden Oldies of Golf If you are a senior golfer or have a friend or relative who is a senior golfer and has an interesting story concerning themselves and golf please send it to me at the Salt Lake Tribune and I'll pass it along Until then here's the first of such stories: Go Irs Golden Oldies: Here's 77- Dale W Barratt's story in his own words: "I first found golf when I was 12- years of age I caddied at Nib ley Park and shagged balls for Mick Riley for 10 cents per hour When we were lucky and got out double 18 holes we would get one dollar "After two summers I was assigned d NI As low PI KO itil or PIP JUNIORS YOUR CHOICE 4140Akey' $9900 4- - t PAIR Lr j 144 - t - v ?'
