'FAL) 1-:- - : 1 ' ' 1 housing for Salt Lake's homeless population Utilizing federal grant monies private donations and State of Utah Check-of- f funds the program provides homes rent-frefor two years to qualified individuals With private-sector donations HEART pays the utilities taxes and insurance for the homes A $20000 contribution from Citibank was seed money to initiate the program Additionally materials including carpet paint and lumber were provided by local building companies "This program is a window of opportunity for the homeless" said John Godfrey Salt Lake County Housing Authority "The program gives the homeless a chance to succeed by getting them out of the shelters providing job opportunities and most importantly giving them the courage to succeed" Central to HEART is an eight-wee- k training program in basic maintenance skills Qualified homeless individuals receive professional training in carpentry electrical and plumbing crafts During the training period students renovate repossessed HUD homes in Salt Lake County preparing them for occupancy by homeless families The Benson's home was renovated by HEART graduates Upon completion of the eight-wee- k course HEART participants serare eligible for vices with the Home Builders Association of Utah and other employers committed to hiring HEART graduates The graduate will also have the opportunity to enter an apprentice-Se- e Page 2 Column 1 Tribune Staff Writer Allan Benson had the typical American dream: He wanted to own a home and provide a comfortable life for his family But after 20 years of hard labor as a machinist his dream crumbled He developed health problems lost his job and his family was evicted from their home Left without options Mr Benson his wife Marlene and their daughter Sherrie moved into the Salt Lake Community Shelter Their son Greg was sent to live with his grandparents to continue his high school education "It was a nightmare" Mr Benson said "It was the lowest point in my life and I was beginning to think we would never get back on our feet or be a family again" But thanks to an innovative new program the Bensons are back together and their future looks bright Through the efforts of HEART (Housing Employment and Rehabilitation Training) the Bensons were relocated from a transitional housing unit to a home in West Valley City The program also provided job training for Mr Benson "It's like a dream come true" Mr Benson said "We've been down on our luck for a while and this program saved us It not only provided me with job training and a home for my family it gave us hope for the : :'' ' - By Stephanie Banchero - — - ' - Into 'Dream' Houses ' 1 ' v '7 i: "sit : !
