Show Uncle Sam's Competition The federal government claims and asserts the right to monopolize the privilege priv-ilege of handling the mails and is supposed sup-posed to tolerate no competitors. . If you start a mail-route and undertake to collect, transport and deliver letters and packages, you will be prosecuted and fined or imprisoned. Yet here are the big telegraph companies advertising night and day telegram-letters and soliciting solic-iting business on the ground that they beat the mails. If this is not competing with Uncle Sam, what is? The government govern-ment will soon have to get after the telegraph business and either absorb it or exercise control over it in the interest of the people. And the same is true of the express business, of course. |
