| Show 1 6W The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday July I 16 1989 I I 1 7 Expectations can spell a really big difference ' ered the effect of modifying expectations A group of college freshmen at Duke University was told that it is common to have some trouble adjusting to college that it is normal to have some failures and that it is a part of adjustment to college life Those students actually did better than other students When they had trouble with school they felt justified in thinking that they were not uniquely dumb or lazy They expected things to get better Unfortunately most attribution research has not looked at processes within the family It seems reasonable to believe though that giving children the benefit of the doubt when they make mistakes and believing that they are fundamentally good is important for their healthy development It may be important for parents to help children appreciate their own abilities and know how to deal with their failures without becoming discouraged In particular the labels that parents use are important In every child we can find qualities to emphasize For example maybe Johnny seems clumsy but is a hard worker We should help him feel pride in his ways If Suzie is stubborn we can help her see herself as a strong person and we can teach her how to use her strength As parents we play a crucial role in helping our children understand themselves It is important that we see and that we help them see all that is good within them Graduate Student ' College of Family Life Utah State University LOGAN — Several decades ago Fritz Heider observed that different people had different perceptions of the same event Heider developed a theory t known as attribu- - r tion theory He defined "attribu- tion" as the process by which we 1 4 decide why some- one behaves as t 4 they do He sug- gested that each ot us has a unique Mr Goddard way of interpret- lag the world around us and that our interpretations have an important trnpact on our behavior ' —An important attribution experi- ment was done by Rosenthal and Jaeobson u ill San Francisco school Children in 1968 7:1he researchers gave teachers the names of students who they predicted would perform extraordinarily well during the course of the school year An fact the students had been randomly selected and were no different from other students in the school But the teachers did not know that The researchers found that the students from whom high performanc was expected did indeed do well during the school year Their achievement scores at the end of the tear were surprisingly high There was another surprising find mg When students who were not expected to do well did well their teachers reacted in ways that dis- -
