in Cracker Jacks has loaned some classic creations for exhibit at Duke University 11 4)7 (UPI) — Gordon world's greatest salespeople and he should know He's tempted millions to buy food products for the toys in-si- The retired businessman — who has manufactured the "premium" toys found in Cracker Jacks cereals and other packaged food items — s Said he built a career on making that make products irresistible to children "A child is the world's greatest super salesman" Gold said "He can fell mom and dad when no one else rk ' -- free---hie- -- can" Gold has loaned many of his classic creations for an exhibit that runs through Aug 18 at the Perkins Library at Duke University He said the exhibit — which includes secret code rings Jackson - Jive Groovie Buttons flying saucers and tiny cameras — is a tribute to his :father Samuel who started the pre 'tnium toy business 80 years ago in :thicago Gold joined his father in ' "1945 "I grew up in business one in which one had to think as a was our whole life We Gold said whole days and nights and spent weekends thinking premiums "We'd get an idea of something flying or something on wheels and we would pursue it" he said "We were big on action toys Sometimes they didn't work out but usually they did" Gold went on to start Gold Premium International which produces more than 300 million premiums annually He sold the company and retired in Chapel Hill NC in 1973 The company had offices in England Mexico France Australia and 15 factories in Hong Kong that manufactured the Cracker Jacks toys "The funny thing about this business is that you don't realize how much work and time it takes" Gold said "It takes drawings and models and molds The whole process is much more difficult because the toys are so small They'd be easier to make if they were normal sized" Continued From F-- 1 and medical costs As he sees it the benefits system has to be controlled Viewing a graph of benefits paid since 1975 gives the impression of a spiral winding up for a bust Claims totaled $52 billion in 1975 in 1988 an estimated $239 billion The issue of who will pay — employers or insurers — is important but it probably isn't the bigger problem Potentially larger is how to save a system whose users seem to be imposing a steadily higher burden on it Many factors are involved Theoretically says Brian you could point to several economic factors such as the size of the work force wage inflation and medical inflation You might also point the finger at legislated benefits increases including the broadening view of what constitutes a compensable claim He discounts the possibility of these being the main factors In fact he calls attention to a decline over recent years in the pressure exerted by state legislaturei The main reason he says is system overuse To offer that explanation is perhaps to invite inquiry into sociological factors but somewhere in that area are some answers Whatever the reason relief is needed or a crisis could develop Insurers have a reputation sometimes applied scornfully of watching every penny Some might seek to cut their own expenses but failing in that area they seem likely to raise rates And that's when the storm Coeds Who Want Family Also Want Career - NEW YORK tUP1) — Almost all female college students who plan to marry and have families said they would return to work at some point after having children a study by Decisions Center showed The marketing research firm's survey conducted among 2100 students on 350 US campuses found 90 percent of female students planned to have a family Slightly less than half said they would return to work shortly after giving birth while 53 percent said they would wait until their children were older Fewer than 3 percent said they would leave work Golia Marlene executive vice president of Decisions Center said most college women do not plan to become career housewives "The message to employers is that many college educated women employees plan to climb the proverbial corporate ladder with children in tow" she said Nearly 88 percent of the 1000 male students included in the survey assumed their future wives would return to work after having children About 50 percent said their spouses would return to work as the children grew older while 39 percent predicted their wives would return to work immediately Only 10 percent assumed their wives would never go back to the office want to see it" Highest Money Market Yields Resource Savings Dallas YIEIDS banks Highest yields reported by federally-insureand thrifts as of July 12 based on stated more expensive" he added Even a merger between two firms that is expected to go smoothly the Ernst & Young one may have problems to iron out For instance until now Ernst has traditionally audited the Coca-Col- a Co while Young has audited Pepsico Inc and some have said that the two beverage makers are too competitive to allow the same firm to see both sets of books A Pepsico spokesman James Griffith said his company had no problem with the pending merger "If the merger is good for them Mc 863 10 Money Funds Average 818 1009 Command Govt 2 Vanguard MMR Federal 950 3 Merrill Lynch CMA Govt The sense that this is a natural and makes good economic sense — I just don't see it" With their multinational clients becoming larger all the firms involved in the recent merger negotiations see little choice The firms hope that the latest mergers will allow them to seek growth in overseas markets as well as to rationalize their costs enough to preserve profits But even deals that look tempting on paper might be hard to realize given the dynamics of combining service firms that employ thousands of people entrusted with maintaining countless client relationships "A merger of a professional service firm is really simultaneously a hundred mergers all at once because all of the real action takes place at the office level" said David Maister a Boston consultant who specializes in professional service firms and is a former Harvard business school mini-mall- ::Prizes in Cracker Jacks school" Mr Pastuer decided to "lay Accountants Rattled by New Merger Plans ll '44004'" i - I:1 1 t i C shop gives you a lot more pull when dealing with people" The Pastuers' kiosk at the ZCMI Center has been so successful that it will remain open until July 29 But Mr Pastuer said he hopes to negoti- ate another lease at that mall for the kiosk for the 1989 Christmas season Mr Pastuer insists he wants to run his shop like a business rather than as an artist colony for glass blowers And interestingly enough this philosophy didn't come from his economics training in college but his fa- Not wanting to "get off track with Provo about 80 miles one way and I was having too many problems with breakage in the shop and the rent was too high" They stayed at the shop for about six months which provided him with enough money to live and a chance to buy more glass stock Then he and his wife approached ZCMI Center downtown about the possihility of settmg up a kiosk a small light structure with one or more open sides in the mall during Christmas 1988 ZCMI Center officials welcomed them The Pastuers operated their kiosk for about two months and considered the experience successful with estimated sales of about $20000 Continued From also experienced their share of hard knocks After returning from a LDS mission to Los Angeles he settled in Provo enrolled at BYU and subsequently married in 1986 "We needed money and it was either get a real marginal job on campus or try to blow glass because there is some pretty good money in it if you can find somebody to buy it from you and if you have skill in it" He tried albeit unsuccessfully to interest the only glass shop in the Provo area in his products however "So we went to a flea market in south Provo in 1987 and you know we took all the glass we could get together and we sold every piece of it That was the Saturday before Mother's Day" While he was happy to make some money and found it encouraging to sell his products Mr Pastuer said he doesn't like the atmosphere of a flea market in which to conduct business That same year he and his wife were approached by the owners of a mini-maat 9000 S Redwood Road to set up a shop there The Pastuers jumped at the chance moving into a shop "The only good thing about that mall was it gave us a chance to do some work to get some more glass together" said Mr Pastuer "We did well there and then they closed the doors to the mall and the company went bankrupt "1 didn't learn from my mistake of s so when reprelocating in sentatives of another one located in Layton approached me I agreed to But it was just open a shop there too many miles from our home in COME TO THE LIOMITAIII --' 0 I rcr) E D voRAL Main Office: 125 South Main Salt Lake City m0 I a li - - : - |
