Show - P The Salt Lake Tribune Utah County heasant Hunt Risky Precedent 3-D- ay Memories of youthful pheasant hunts in Utah County are poignant Our old mongrel hunting dog used to bury himself in the heavy thicket along a canal west of American Fork He'd point roosters and hens by the dozens Dad would look on proudly giving each of his fellow hunters a turn to shoot behind the old mutt After work in the haze of a November sunset we'd drive to Cedar Fort n for a hunt Coming home with a ringneck this late in the season was always a surprise Just watching the dogs work while we walked quietly through the field was enough I shot my first pheasant in Utah County as a Many a young dog yearned to hunt in the wild opening seconds of such hunts Sadly after the Utah Wildlife Board responded to farmers and politicians and sportsmen Thursday and set a three-da- y pheasant season in Utah County this fall I won't be hunting those fields this season In fact I'll do my best to avoid making any purchase at all in Utah County in October and November If the politicians don't want pheasant hunters there then perhaps its time to take the hint and spend money where it is welcome Though I wasn't able to attend Thursday's wildlife board meeting from those counties will start to complain and before long we'll have a three-da- y pheasant hunt statewide The other main proponents of the three-da- y season are but sportsmen These experts feel they know more than the paid biologists Their logic is simple Pheasant populations are so low that shorter hunts will provide more birds in the future Considering the fact that Utah pheasant hunters don't shoot hens this argument is patented nonsense which ignores almost all biological data About 90 percent of the pheasants killed during the season go down in the first hour of the season Division of Wildlife Resources biologists say the length of the season makes no difference in terms of numbers of birds The only way to improve pheasant population is to improve habitat Because of the Conservation Reserve Program pheasant habitat in Utah is improving AIMIEMIE1 Tom Wharton the arguments for a shorter pheasant season have all been heard before Farmers and landowners obviously don't want the hassle of dealing with seapheasant hunters for a nine-da- y son Who can blame them? There are too many sportsmen who break fences ignore no trespassing signs fail to ask permission leave litter and shoot too close to stock But landowners can close their property any time they wish Should they be allowed to dictate wildlife late-seaso- lengths? I think not By agreeing to these peoples' demands the wildlife board is setting a dangerous What will happen this fall is that pheasant hunters used to traveling to hunts Utah County for will move into Davis Box Elder Weber and Sanpete Counties in large numbers Next season landowners late-seaso- n 112:14'lliblata 71 7711 COMPLETiiiiAil''EiLAWN CARE ' $20 A Little League Football Skill ramp will be conducted by Gean Naga for-triWest High coach at the Cottonwood Recreation Center 2700 E PER MONTH a snap lik14410 t 5 7500 South July from 9 am to noon Plaga will be assisted by Bud Murray former South High coach and Jim Maw from West High The camp is for quarterbacks running backs split ends defensive backs linebackers and kickers in the Little League age limits The tuition is $40 for the five-da- y camp Interested persons should call or or MurPlaga (266-308- 0 ) ray 11-1- -- A 'S divmson - I " tclocA :itil:' : 1: r rv 266-876- -- 1 ' ''id r'o a - elnill ' 4''-Zr- i! t r4 0' ' 0 i::: ': 1::‘"'''' - 44 fi iv a --- - - - - ::! ::: t :: fr ::: o- - ti ig tj f t "A ‘Nt N ::tks -- - - - - t- t - -:- :: ' '- ri A ::::::::::::::::t: 4 I :::':::::'::::''''''':::''''''''::' ' ' - ::i ::""::' ' ' - ' 411i :: F!! f "- :t 'U:41 trt 40 40: i i '1:A:':-:iv i : Mc JULY r)1:Z::::J- r 2 104 10 :41 4 !N) P: -- INk g: HOURS: 9 am- - 4:40 e pm with break ter lunch Hi: r: School and Orem Recreation Center () PRIZES AND AWARDS zi" :it' Alf II L Tli cto cm xm FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION SEE tiLioi i Ittvi 1 al liiLfi vAR"71il Ci Plo r- -' tit-e- 1 '1 Ik' s Ci:tY13V 11' --- zit: - 4 r ir v j'64: 1 ' - - 'taiil - I sctl-''- 1 I I I ' t Ill rir ' : : ' I '1k111X114111I'4)):40 - 4k1 i 4 ' '441" dc i '''' iip ''''st ' i" 4 : v : lit -' '- ' A Y 4 "'so v Iii:-- mai' - A1 1 1 ti 44 ' ' c' (14 1 p 4 7 q 4 '- : 1 0 t '!tI ' i " ''' r 1 ' I 1 4' ' '': ikis: ''' t 4 t 1 ) ' 1 il 0 SEDAN ISUZU11-1111ARI- C di i 64 ' $ el a r ' I: i St 17o4 4' : - -7- )-- '' -- 7:'':''o 0 - - 10 ''' - o - 0-- ' ''' -- i a 1' diffitet 00 EZ3 — COIVIPARE! f ': fit) 1)1 ' TROOPERS STARTING AT o R atti - ' — I 2 I 195 VEFIRZEEL ' ' to DRIVE r I I ARE HERE ' Jo : : 4 WHEEL ttA PICKUP TRUCKS 12 it 1 - 7! - 741----- itz--- LP 0 1 S -!- 7°111"11- 17""osto 127- e ' 0 t 4 V: -‘ 0 tO 9861 7) 11'& I( (0 i SHORTBED LONGBED SPACE CABS DON'T BUY ANY TRUCK 1 UNTIL YOU DRIVE AN ISUZU ! i ::::H i -0- -- ::'! 4sii:H:: ttt:::ii1::‘1::::t ::: 1: :::: -!": :: -- ::::: 777:77!7777r"'::::: : :a: :: i 1 1' V :::':1:71!'7777::::-777:::77':- jNoiooese-- L ik' n ti': hi - - A ' r ('S ''''''" i''''7 1 '' ) ill f :::::::::: " 1" 7 1 i - LIVE ON T SALT PALACE 7:00 PM ARENA Reserved seats: 83000 & $2500 All SmIth'sTut Salt Palace Huntsman Center Produced by United Concerts -- - -- V It "W ATt: ‘' : 71--- : ft :3--:1757-4- RAPAL" r" - 7— '7 ' L :T" rTIVTn''11 4401 '''''' 'Itt e L' 1 4:'''i !L 1- TE fa" 91- 1 ' 1 '' 'i I rl 1'111 6 117- - i k ‘ I lo ! it0t I t 1 ' ' 4 "‘ 1' A li ''' '114 ' A ''' fl ifet ' I ' 0' 4 1IttI :'' 'Ms '" : t D'iSCOLINT'7-1PAYMENTS - - c tI 'iT1 ''' V'' - FOX 'I: I STATION- - f WAGON ii: (' - '4 r ' - 41 " 1 t: 7 41 7 i- - - rAMT2jiT PLAN ALSO - !Avroilkkoit-:' ' '!' 1: -- ij Ori 1 Per Month - ' ' - '' : 4 WHEEL VANAGON S) S:I000" DISCOUNT ' '161 :0 1!
