Show SO THE PEOPLE MAY KNOW This paper shall do its utmost toward inducing the next legislature to pass a law commanding school board to publish their important notices ' in newspapers where people will see and read them. They do publish them in most places where there are are newspapers.but hh we want them to publish themffAill towns and cities. All the Sanpete paV. ers have had notices in them this year of the school election and the meeting preceding it, and all others should have. Think of it. Here is so important an affair as the election of two trustees .and the holding of a meeting to hear the report of how thousands and tens rn'- of thousand of the peoples dollars have been spent, and no notice given through ' the paper. Instead the notices are , nested where very few see them. The , -suit is that no one attends the meet- j J i I in nd but rery fenr (ro to tbe pel! This could be changed If tho tf Uiteee would co-operate with their newspaper. Officials of the ichool can put it down that they will only be doinff their duty when they do as the officers of the majority of progressive towns do. The trustees have the entire good will of this paper but it wiBhes a closer co-operation with them. Let us have a law commanding the publication of official notices in the school line. Another good thing that should be commanded by law is the publication in every paper in the country of the business transacted at each session ses-sion of the county commissioners; also the lists of jurors drawn, and the calendar calen-dar of each term of court. These things should be made official by law and published pub-lished at regular space rates. What will the cost amount to? Absolutely nothing compared to the inestimable service rendered by the papers. Too much cannot be done for the newspapers newspap-ers in the community or the county. Had it not been for the press the county if inhabited at all, would not have courts and officials and lawyers and doctors and schools and school men. In cities of any consequence the idea among officials and politicians is to see how much they can do for their newspaper. news-paper. One paper not a thousand miles away, was sued for overcharging five thousand dollars on a single item, the officials desiring to give that to their paper. Of course we are selfish in this matter and arguing for a little butter for our bread, but the public will be greatly benefitted if these ideas were framed into law. Salina Call. We are in hearty sympathy with the above from the Salina Call. Too much publicity cannot be given the facts as I to the way each dollar of public money ! is spent. The publication of the com-! com-! plete minutes of all meetings of county j and school district officers would help ! out the taxpayer in many ways. The honest official would like to have this done and the dishonest one should have ' to face the record each time. A law ! in regard to public notices is needed in Utah and if the papers will all stand out for candidates who favor it they : can get it. It is needed by the people : and should be advocated by them and ; the papers. |
