Basketball Outlook Ute Team Working to Rebuild; Race Still On for Top 5 Spots By John Mooney .'r Tnbune Sports Editor Graduation hit Coach Jerry Pimm harder than in any of his previous four years as University of Utah basketball coach, but hes confident by the time the conference race rolls around, his Utes will be a decent challenger. Until this year, we had the task of replacing one or two starters a year, but this year, we must replace Buster Matheney, Jeff Judkins and Michael Grey," Pimm explains. 1 dont mean to paint a bleak picture of Utahs prospects, but to be honest, we still must be a question mark. How well we fare in the race depends entirely on how soon we can jell as a team. he added. Tough Schedule Our schedule is tough to start, with Boise State Saturday night and Utah State on Tuesday before we go on the road to play Southern California and Oregon State. We may lose some early-seaso- n games, but we will be a developing, improving ball club, Im confident," Pimm added. . Analyzing his prospects, Pimm said, Danny Vranes is great, but were trying to select the best lour men to play alongside him. As a freshman last year, Vranes averaged 12 2 joints a game and 7.2 rebounds. He shot 55 percent fiom the field and can score inside or from -- ot range. Deane to Start who was without peer as a sixth man Deane, Greg coming off the bench last year, will start at one of the inside positions. Greg is the guy who made things happen for us last .year and he has more confidence this fall, knowing hes in the lineup every game. Greg is a good athlete and has more poise and confidence as a senior, Pimm analyzed. Earl Williams, one of the best defensive guards in the WAC, is back for his senior year at 5 and 200 pounds. Williams is a clutch shooter, with 42 9 percent from the field for three years. 6-- The surprise of the early season is Bobby Roots, walk-o- n who switched who was an unrecruited from Weber State Roots was voted the most inspirational player by his teammates this year and hes challenging Tom Chambers for the starting center spot. - The center spot is a healthy situation with Bobby trailing Tom just a trifle, but admitting he hasn't given up his intent of starting for us, Pimm continued. Chambers, a soph who played behind Matheney last year, lacks consistency, according to the coaching staff. But Chambers also has some fine talents for a young player. Leavitt Stronger Coby Leavitt, Pimm noted, is playing better than he ever has at Utah. He has a little more weight and hes stronger and hell see a lot of action for us as a forward-center- . With Williams at guard probably will be Scott Martin, another freshman from a year ago, Pimm added. , 26 Others who qualify for the Outland Award by virtue of making the writers team are offensive linemen Kelvin Gark', Nebraska, Pat Howell. Southern California, Dave Huffman, Notre Dame, and Greg Roberts of Oklahoma and defensive linemen Mike Bell of Colorado State, Marty Lyons of Alabama and Jimmy Walker of Arkansas Penn State was the only team to place three men on the team, but five schools placed two men on the team Oklahoma had l urunng hack Billy Sims in addition to Roberts Texas placed defensive back Johnnie Johnson as well as Erxleben. USC had running back Charles White and Howell Notre Dame placed Huffman and linebacker Bob Golic. while UCLA was represented by defensive back Ken Easley and linebacker Jerry Robinson Robinson, who also made the team in 1976. was one of four repeaters from the 1977 team The other repeaters were Louisiana State running back Charles Alexander, Erxleben and Domey. Other players on the team are Wyoming linebacker Ken Fatettie, Richmond defensive back Jeff Nixon. Southern Methodist wide receiver Emanuel Tolbert, Michigan State tight end Mark Brammer and Arizona State defensive lineman A1 Harris The Football Writers Association committee that picked the team was headed by President Edgar Allen of the Nashville Banner. Oklahoma State Coach Axed - Danny Vranes Back at Forward Bohhy Roots Surprise of Oklahoma State STILLWATER, Okla. fUPI) head football coach Jim Stanley, whose Cow boys just completed their worst season under his direction, was relieved of his coaching duties Tuesday. The announcement was made by University President L. L. Boger, who said Stanley will be reassigned at the University. In view of all the circumstances, it appeared that a change in the leadership of our football program would be in the best interests of the University, Boger said in a prepared statement. The Cowboys Saturday finished the season at their worst record under Stanley's direction His overall won-lofor his six years as head coach was Tom Chambers In Race for Center Early Season But Donnie Rices confidence has returned and a lot as a human being, and he u ill help us a lot. Our outside shooting should improve Rice and freshman Curt Clawson hit eight of 11 attempts from the field Monday against the Polish team. Depth at Guard Martin and Williams moved the ball well and combined for seven assists Freshman Leonard Johnson added five assists. The guards will have depth. Behind Vranes well play Leavitt Johnson will back up Martin and freshman Dan Larson will back up Chambers and Roots in the post. Johnson also can play the tall forward post and Karl Bankowski. who lettered as a freshman last year, will work behind Deane. Rice and Clawson will work behind Williams and Jay Judkins, another soph, will work into the front line, too, Pimm added. Utah still will be a ery young club with only Deane. Roots and Williams as seniors, and Leavitt and Rice as juniors. Five sophs and three freshmen make up the squad, so experience must come quickly in the preseason games for the Utes to live up to their No. 1 challenger role in the WAC polls. Looking ahead to the WAC race, Pimm admits BYU should be the favorite, with all starters returning. Entire League Strong But I think the league, from top to bottom, is the strongest in several years, Pimm predicted. Last year, Utah and champion New Mexico split, but the Utes lost to Colorado State on the road, thereby becoming the first team to win 12 league games and not win the championship. The dismissal of the Mallory had been rumored for several weeks since an upset loss to conference foe Oklahoma State. That was followed by losses to powerhouses Nebraska and Oklahoma and to Iowa State and Kansas State. The dismissal was announced after Mallory met with Colorado University Athletic Director Eddie Crowder, the man he replaced when he came to Boulder in 1974 from Miami of Ohio. 43.24 44.92 H78-1- 5 COLT speed-stripe- s ST.
