Show !t ' 2H Th Utah Director Sees Good Hunting Year Ahead Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, September 28, 1962 By HAROLD CRANE Director, Utah Dept. Prospects for the fall hunting seasons are good. Heavy snow packs throughout the mountains last winter, along with good spring rainfalls, conspired to break the drought of the past several years, thereby brightening field opportunities for the coming seasons. Current water levels and" a good supply of foods produced on the states waterfowl marshes this year are expected to attract and hold good numbers of ducks and geese for the season starting at noon, Oct 13, this year. Our production of geese was once again high this year and a bit better than normal for ducks on the state marshes As of now, there are ample birds on hand to provide good hunting opportunity. Deer Forecast Tops Field reports once again forecast a good harvest of Utahs , most abundant big game animal, the mule deer. The chance for a successful hunt for these Important game animals is exceeded in no other state. Many upland game bird hunters have already enjoyed excellent hunting on birds dur Fish-Gam- 4 f ; V iiw r F'tr u$A e ing the recently ended mourning dove and grouse seasons and the continuing hunt for chukar and Hungarian partridge, this season having gotten underway Sept. 15 and continuing through Nov. 15 in all counties. The pheasant and quail seasons, scheduled to begin Nov. 3, should provide a bag return equal to that of a year ago, according to our field .information. With the major hunting seasons now at hand each hunter should once again resolve to conduct himself in a sportsmanlike manner at all times when afield. By all means dont leave your manners at home when you go hunting. Pheasant Hunt Caution During the upland game bird seasons, especially, we should all be constantly aware of our obligations, both as good sportsmen and as law abiding citizens, to respect the wishes of the landowner and the sanctity of his property wherever and whenever we pursue our outdoor recreation. The few minutes it takes to get personally acquainted with your land owner host and obtain his permission to trespass can spell the difference in a successful outdoor trip and assure the privilege of hunting again next season. The senous hunter should experience no real difficulty in bagging his game this season. This would not include the road hunter nor others who are unwilling to make the necessary' preparations and time to seek the game. We are hopeful the 1962 hunting seasons will find each license buyer acting in safety as he displays courtesy to his fellow hunter. Your department has continued to expend much effort in the hunter safety training program and we are certain that the hunter safety law has been responsible for the great reduction in hunting accidents during the past several years. Care Means Enjoyment Lastly, it is well known that those who know and observe the hunting regulations stand the best chance of enjoyment during the fall seasons. While most hunting regulations remain the same this year as in the past, big game hunters should pay special attention to the proper use of the new paper deer tag in use this year for the first time. cedure will be rigidly enforced this year. Proclamations listinge ngulations for, alj huns are availbale from all our of. fices or from license agents throughout the State. In many respects this new the tag is easier to use than has old metal strap tag that become so familiar to hunters. Most certainly the new tag will eliminate many problems and law violations which have become recurrent over the com-plet- years. Hunters should be aware that certain sections in this new tag must be punched out in the field, Immediately after the animal is killed, to coincide with the physical description of the game animal and the date of kill Ah laws pertain- ing to the tag and togging pro- HUNTERS DEER Wear Your Trophy! Deer Data Decrees Good Hunt By EABL A. SPARKS Utah Department Another deer season is fast approaching and sportsmen should be thinking about sighting in the old deer rifle, getting red or yellow clothing together and planning the coming hunting trip. Department of Fish and Game work aimed at the 1962 deer hunt has been In progress since last October. The climax to our work will, of course, come Oct. 20 through Oct. 30, but even then the data collected this fall will be analyzed with an eye toward 1963. Again for 1962, the Board of Big Game Control has decreed that fairly liberal seasons will be in order. All factors considered, the 1962 deer season should give each and every hunter ample opportunity to be afield in pursuit of a trophy mule deer. Three Early Areas Three areas in Utah are open to deer hunting a week before the general opener. These areas (open Oct 13) are: The Muddy Drainage (southeast Manti Mt.). Henry Mountains, and Paunsaugant near Kanab. This should be of special interest to those whose schedule does not allow them the general season opener. These areas are somewhat rugged, especially during stormy periods, and hunters should go equipped in the event of a storm it has been known to happen. All the rest of the state opens to deer hunting on Oct. 20. Closing dates vary greatly with Fish-Gam- e season lengths running from six days to seventy-on- e days. Be sure to check the proclamation closely for the ending date in the area of your choice, and if any question still exists dont be afraid to ask someone who knows for sure. Special permit for either sex or antlerless deer are still available on many units and will be through the season, but most two-dee-r permits have been sold. pared to care for their game properly and to set up an adequate camp. As always, weather conditions effect not only the hunt, but access to areas and camp comfort. Thus, hunters should prepare for the worst and hope they do not need their adverse weather equipment. Property Respect Urged A reminder to respect the rights and property of others is surely in order. Please respect private property. Very few landowners will deny access if a courteous request to use their lands is offered. In driving to the area camping and hunting courtesy to others is easily" given and costs absolutely nothing. Courtesy, careful hunting, and obediance to the game laws offer a greater challenge than do the deer. It is up to you as a hunter and sportsman to meet this challenge. Season Outlook Good Now to the season outlook! Hunters will undoubtedly experience better hunting in the southern and eastern sections of Utah.
