Show AN OIL COMPANY ORGANIZED For Business in Emery Field - Oil City Platted A Railroad Rail-road Projected--Drill Already Running May Strike Oil at Any Time With the organization and filing Tuesday Tues-day of articles of incorporation of the American Oil & Refining company, backed by the declaration of Manager H. A. Pitts that the company is now negotiating for the purchase of a standard stand-ard drilling rig and hopes to have the outfit on the ground and drilling within thirty to forty days, interest in Emery county oil lands is given a new impetus. The new company takes in 240 acres of land adjoining on the north the newly new-ly platted town of Oil City, which has been laid off in the heart of the great E.nery county incline, seventy-five miles south and a little west of Price. Judging Judg-ing from the out-croppings of the oil sands as seen on the San Rafael swell, six miles to the southeast of Oil City, the American Oil people expect to strike the first oil sand at a depth of about 600 feet. This is nearly 600 feet thick, separated sepa-rated from the second oil sand by a fifteen-foot layer of impervious sandstone, sand-stone, when the second oil sand of 100 feet thickness will be reached. The next layer is 500 feet of hard sandstone, under which lies the third oil sand of 100 feet thickness. "These formations have been proven beyond question," said Mr. Pitts, "in the deep river cuts over on the swell, where the upturned edges of the strata are wet with the oozing oils." These strata dip gradually toward Oil City, under which territory it is anticipated a great subterranean oil pool will be tapped within the next few days, as one rig is now boring in the vicinity. The rig of P. Welch of Spokane is drilling three miles and a half northeast of Oil City. At last reports the drills had reached 400-foot depth, and the indications in-dications were exceedingly good. Favorable Favor-able word from there is expected every day now, the probability being that the first oil Aill be tapped at about 600 feet. The American Oil & Refining company com-pany is incorp jrate I for $100,000, having hav-ing 500.00J sh ires of 20 cents par value" The offi ;ers are as follows. G. E. Cox, president; H. A. Pitts, vice president; Charles M. Lang, secretary and treasurer, treas-urer, who, together with J. F. Turner, George E. Hemphill. L. H. Start, Sig-rir;l Sig-rir;l Gransta i. forn thi directorate. : Oil City has already been laid o!T and platted, embracing 333 lots. Only a mile from the new town is a remarkably fine reservoir site, which, with only a dam constructed on one side, will hold 11,000, 000 gallons of water. This water supply will be used for the town anl for drilling, etc.. having a fall of forty feet. The reservoir is the natural receptacle for all rain ,nd snow water for a large territory, and it is estimated that it will furnish an ample supply of water i for all purposes. i "Oil City has granted right of way and grounds for depot and trackage to j the Eastern Utah Railroad company, ! which is being incorporated by Price I and Salt Lake men. backed by Kansas j City capital, " says Mr. Pitts. "Already forty-two miles of the seventy-five ! miles to Oil City has been graded." j Dr. Maloney and Mr. Wade of Price are : interested in the new road, and Mr. ; Pitts will be a director. They hope to I have it built next year, anyway. Her-I Her-I aid Republican. |
