Show COLORADO FIGHTS THE GRAZING FOE As foreshadowed in the columns ot the progress last week head forester gifford pinchot met with the cattlemen of the western slope of colorado last tuesday at glenwood springs and there was quite a stormy time over cattlemen were present depre benting nearly every county in the state A denver report of the meeting says the cattlemen drew first blood yes berday in so much that mr pinchot announced several modifications would be made in the grazing rules but declared himself as firmly op posed to the abolition of the tax A letter was read from president roose velt in which he took the same views he stated that the cattleman is am mediately benefited by the use of the reserves for grazing and therefore ought to pay for it he said the tax will only provide one tenth of the cost of maintaining the reserves resolutions were adopted by the cattlemen embody ing a demand for the abolition of the tax and for other reforms demanded in the convention another on was adopted call ing for a representative from each cattle association in the state to go to washington and present the views ot the convention to the president and it necessary go before congress senator sapp of gunnison declared that the tax was not a square deal the cattlemen alone were not bene cited by the forest reserve but the entire country at large and the cattle men should therefore be no more re quiren to pay the expenses of keeping up the forests than the people locally benefited by river and harbor im prove ments sho lid be required to pay for these improvements senator ed taylor said that the forest reserve system had not been established by the demand of any colorado citizen the idea ong bated in the east his insinuation that the idea had been advanced by some in teresta that are not tor the welfare of this country was received with a burst of applause it being understood as a reference to the beef trust in conclusion he asked that m n would be p it n charge of the tore t reserves who would be acquainted with the needs and conditions of the sect on under their immediate charge and who would use common sense in he enforcement of the regulations heretofore men who have abao no knowledge of the habits at attle are placed in the charge of the deserves and are absolute dictators as 0 o how many head of cattle and on what portions of the reserve the grow r may feed his herd |
