Show t V . V M .f I THE HERALD - JOURNAL, LOGAN, UTAH, MONDAY, NOVEMBER PAGE EIGHT 2, 1931. Vote For A. G. Lundstrom For Mayor; N. W. Merk-le- y For Commissioner; H. R. Pedersen For Auditor Candidates For Logan Loyal Party FOR MAYOR The Loyal Logan Party calls upon the voters of Logan City to elect its candidates and return Mayor Lundstrom and his associates to office for the following reasons: 1. We have conducted a clean campaign, refraining from all personalities, except to answer specific questions or charges made by the United Organization against individuals. 2. The Voters should keep in mind that some of the main supporters 1 and 15 of their delegates are members of the 56 who fought Logan City in favor of the Utah Power & Light Company; and that 25 of their delegates and alternates rather than support the City Plant are now buying current at the higher price from the Utah Power & Light Company. These statements are unchallenged and therefore admitted. We do not believe that candidates backed by such supporters will look after the City Plant for the best interest of the people. 3. The United Organization has failed to put forward a single constructive principle or issue for the upbuilding of our community. They have entirely ignored their platform pledge in which they state: We invite no controversy over what rightfully belongs to the past; we propose to indulge in no alities; our eyes are on the welfare of this community from this time forward. But, on the contrary ' they have ing dulged in an ugly, campaign of personalities and destructive criticism, calculated to mislead and confuse the people and stir up suspicion, strife, and ill will in our community, to disunite rather mud-slingin- than unite Logan. For this, if for no other reason, they should receive the rebuke of the voters of this city, so that it may be definitely understood that the people do not approve such campaign methods. 4. The United Organization has had paid agents examine the City Records in an effort to fiitd any errors or discrepancies, but none could be found. Where they have published figures they have given only one side of the ledger which is unfair to the City Administration and Misleading to the people. 5. They have printed in bold headlines that $158,477.00 has been diverted from the Water and Sewer Funds, but failed to state that of this amount was money which the General Fund owed and has paid back to the Electric Light Plant Fund, and that the balance has been diverted into the Street Department during the past five years. They also fail to state that for the ten years period prior to the Lundstrom administration the diversions from these funds and from the general fund into The Street Department was even greater. They also failed to state that the reason for this diversion was that the law. for second class cities permitted only 2 mills for Streets and Parks which would only produce enough revenue to light the streets. We have asked them several times to state what they would have done; whether or not they would have diverted funds for the upkeep of the streets the same as this and prior administrations for the street department or whether they wrould let the streets go. They have refused to answer ' that question. Why? They are thus $64,-989,- 73 holding two inconsistent positions: First, they criticise this administration for not doing more on the streets, and second, they criticise this administration for diverting funds for street purposes which was the only way in which the streets work could be done until the law was changed in 1930. 6. In 1925 the people by an overwhelming majority elected Mayor Lundstrom and Mr. N. W. Merkley to office to put the Light Plant on its feet and make it an asset rather than a liability, if that were possible. Mayor Lundstrom stated that this could be done. Has his administration made good? We say that it has for the following reasons: (a) In 1925 there was a deficit of over $8,500.00 after paying interest and operating expenses; in 1930 there was a net gain of over $48,000 after paying interest and operating expenses. (b) The Citys assets have been increased approximately $400,000.00 since Mayor Lundstrom took office. (c) Tlie people of Logan have saved through low rates and law suits which have been won approximately $156,000.00 during the past five years. (d) The annual gross revenues from the City Light Plant have in- creased approximately $75,000.00. In addition to that it should be stated that winning the right of municipalities to operate their own utilities and fix their own rates on light and water, etc., has also resulted in large benefits to the people in this state outside of Logan City. Also, compelling the William Memorial Budge Hospital to pay its of share the taxes has resulted in a 4 saving to the taxpayers of approximately $2,000.00 annually. The present City Administration is also to be commended for their ef- forts to gain back the power and storage rights of Logan City, valued at a quarter of a million dollars, which were lost through default of the City The job of putting the City Plant fully on its feet is yet completed. The present administration is familiar with all of the details and in-192- have demonstrated ability to handle the job in a successful manner. Why shouldnt they be permitted to complete the task? Why this sudden cry It is time for a change? Do the people want Mayor Lundstrom to complete his job and make the City' Plant a permanent asset to the people of Logan? He has now demonstrated that the City Plant can save the people approximately $60,000.00 per year in low rates and yet make a handsome gain over and above paying operating expenses and interest. We believe that the great majority of the people will be loyal to the City Light Plant and will be unanimous in their verdict to allow Mayor Lundstrom, N. W. Merkley and H, R. Pedersen to finish their work. LOYAL LOGAN PARTY, Weston Vernon, Lorenzo Hansen, J. A. Hulme, George Mikkelsen, M. Smith, George D. Harding, George B. Bowen, Executive Committee.
