safety in P detary med dries cines replying to the charge that certain popular proprietary medicines contain narcotic drugs an adt authority hority says some years ago one of the lead leading ing pharmacists of america in ill connee connection tion with some official work undertook to ascertain by an elaborate inquiry in representative cities of the country what percentage of physicians pre script lons ions contained a narcotic drug of some kind hind out of depre tentative prescriptions dispensed in au drug stores in all parts of the united states it was found that 70 per cent contained opium or some one of its preparations proprietary medic nes are almost invariably accompanied by the most detailed and specific directions for use nsf while the directions accompanying physicians prescriptions are generally very brief and sometimes illegible it is also true that but a moderate proportion of proprietary medicines con tain any poison or narcotic and when they do it is generally in such small quantities or so protected by accod lanying antidotes as to carry with it no danger ger whatever
