But for those who might prefer not to revisit that decade's style mishaps, the show is still great fun. Based on the 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon, "Footloose" had its debut on Broadway in 1998. Though some new songs were written for the stage production, the writers and composers retamed the movies original hit music; aOkLences will recognize such popular songs as "Let's Hear it for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," acid-wash- ed nt Jf'itrki, J ' Li? "Footloose" was adapted for the stage by Dean Pitchford, who also wrote die movie script, and Walter Bobbie. The music is by Tom Snow, with contributions from Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins. Cyprus' production is directed by Kerry Moore, choreographed by Stacey Moore and conducted by Rob Ness. More than 100 students are involved in the cast, chorus, crew and pit orchestra of 'Footloose." "Ifs got a lot of fun music and dancing m it," said Kerry Moore. Andrea Freestone, a senior at Cyprus and a member of the chorus agrees. '1 thmk its awesome. Ifs one of toe best plays I've ever seen," she said. "Footloose" is the story of Ren McCormack, played by Cyprus' Scott Russell a high school student from Chicago who moves to a small town called Bomonl The big city boy has a hard time fitting in, especially after learning that dancing, which he loves, was outlawed five years ago. After four Bomont teenagers were killed in a car crash, an influential preacher. Rev. Shaw Moore, played by Blake Heywood, convinced the town council to ban dancing, which la believes led to the accident Ren vows to take on the preacher and toe town council with help from Rev. Moore's own daughter, Ariel Moore, played by Heidi Hendrickson, whom he has begun dating. When toe town council rejects Ren's motion to legalize dancing, he goes to the church to talk to the preacher himself, where he teams the true reason for Rev. Moore's staunch support of the ban. As a result of then conversation, Rev. Moore has a change of heart In addiuon to Ren, Rev. Moore and Ariel, the show's lead parts include Ethel McCormack, Ren's mother, played by Becca Lemon; Vi Moore, Rev. Moore's wife, played by Andrea Stanley; Ariel's three best friends. Rusty, played by Whitney Moore; Urleen, played by Kimberly Debs and Wendy Jo, played by Samantha Goodwin; Willard Hewitt played by FT11I Smith, a boy who befriends Ren; and Chuck Cranston, played by The students and teachers involved m the show have been rehearsing six days a week since Sept 17. 'The rehearsals have been great," said Kerry Moore. 'The kids bought into this show right from the beginning. They've been working extremely well because tliey enjoy the show." Cyprus senior, Phil Smith, agreed with this assessment "It's come together a tot faster than it has in years past I think everybody wants this to be good because it's "Footloose," and it's really good music," he said. Cyprus' production benefits from strong singers and actors in the lead parts; their voices carry well over an orchestra of electric guitars and percussion. Most unpressive are the students playing adult roles, who are convincing as characters much older than they are. In addition, the chorus of singers and dancers is exuberant; ensemble dance scenes are especially exciting to watch. The show is appropriate for all ages. Though the movie included scenes of and references to teen drinking and sex, those have been left out of the stage version. "Footloose" will be performed m the auditorium at Cyprus High School 8623 W 3000 S, on Nov. 15, 16, 18. and 19 at 7 p m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door.
