Show J I Th Magna TimeWat Valley Naws, Auguat 1 , 2002 S Sports West Valley takes top honors in softball tournaments The West Valley Bonnet Ball fast pitch softball teams, 12 year olds, left, 14 year olds, right and IS year olds, below, took first place in the Inaugural; West Valley Classic. , Three West Valley girls softball teams from the Bonnet Ball League won Saturday's first West Valley Classic girls fast pitch softball ' tournament. The double elimination toumament was held at the Centennial Park softball fields July 26-2- 7 and featured more than 32 teams from throughout the Salt Lake, Tooele, Davis and Heber valleys. West Valley's Bonnet Ball 1 and teams took first place honors in their respective divisions. The West Valley Classic was dedicated in honor of the late Mayor Gearld Wright who had been a sponsor and avid supporter of the girls softball league. "Mayor Wright has a big part in softball," said Marcie Cannon, a member of the Bonnet Ball board. "He helped get the fields at the fitness center for West Valley Bonnet Ball, sever- - al of his granddaughters played ball and he sponsored both the Bonnet Ball League and the West Valley Classic." The Bonnet Ball All Star teams were chosen in May in five age divisions that would include girls from age 5 to 18. All five age groups entered the Bonnet Ball Tournament held at Vista Park in Taylorsville A team took The on June 5. first place in the tournament while the 12 and 1 8 teams places second in their diviyear-ol- d sions. At the Oquirrh Mountain Tournament, the 1 8 team placed third and the 1 6 year-ol- d year-ol- d team placed fourth. In the State Tournament, held July 6 in Pleasant Grove, the West Valley 16 year-ol- d team both won first team and the 1 4 year-ol- d team place in their divisions; the 1 8 year-ol- d and the team placed third. 15-2- 5-- Stingers Field of Dreams team Accidents plagued weekend RMR races Rocky Mountain Raceways was packed with racing action last weekend as the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series took to the oval, featuring the Maverik Late Models, PPG Modifieds, Snap-O- n Super Stocks, Legends and the AIS Super Mini Cups. Each class had some problems in their main events, as the yellow caution flag came out frequently due to a large number of wrecks. None of the drivers involved in those wrecks, however, sustained injuries, although most of their cars suffered a lot of damage. This upcoming weekend at RMR features the SLCSR Midnight Drags on Friday night. Many Utah Highway Patrol and other officials will be on hand with their vehicles to show their support for these legal drag races for street racers. Saturday and Sunday will feature the Maverik Clash of the Titans VI National Monster Truck Competition on the oval track. RMR is the only track in the country to feag ture outdoor, figure-8- , style Monster Truck Competitions. Saturday's competition will feature figure 8, racing for the Monster Trucks and they will be joined by the PPG Modifieds and the American Race Trucks. Sunday's competition will feature e g racing for the style, Monster Trucks and they will be joined by the SLVRA Sprint Cars and the Snap-O- n Super Stocks. These different show are a new feature for RMR. "This is very exciting," s said pitcher Buck Shakespear. "I never thought I'd be here." After their introduction to the crowd, the took the field in their respective field positions accompanied by their Stinger counterparts for the singing of the National Anthem. "This is something they will never forget," said team Manager Bart Burnside. "I want them to win games, but more than that, I want them to remember this."
