Garfield Credit Union merged with TransWest Credit Union on On June 30to better serve their members. The newly merged credit unions will host a week-lon- g celebration July 15 thru July 19 for the community to meet and become acquainted with the staff and celebrate the long-standin- merger. At the time of the merger, Garfield Credit Union, had 2700 members and more than $7 million in assets. As a result of the merge, TransWest Credit Union will have nearly 14,000 members and'more than $77 million in assets, which is expected to allow more products, services and locations. Garfield Credit Union began serving the Kennecott Copper Mine employees in the smelter area of the copper mine in June 1950 under the name of Garfield Smeltermens Credit Union. In the early years Garfields records were carried around in a shoe box. If a member needed a loan, members would deposit enough money to be able to disburse the funds for the loan. Membership continued to grow and the credit union began operating from an office in the smelter. Garfield Credit Union also sponsored other employment groups such as; American Smelting and Refining Co., Park City Ventures, Magnesium Division Industries, Inc. (MagCorp.) and Canteen Food and Vending Services. Through growth and member loyalty, the credit union relocated from the Smelter to its current location at 9024 West 2700 South in Magna, where it has continued to operate. In 1981, Garfield Credit Union expanded and opened it's second office on Redwood Road. In 983, the credit union opened its field of membership to residents of 1 Callister - Hook City office was built in 1966 at its current location of 37 West 1 700 South. The credit union opened its field of membership to residents of Salt Lake County in 1984. Since 1985, all deposits have been federally insured to $100,000 by the NCUA, an agency of the Federal Government. In 1986, the Sandy branch, located at 10692 South State Street, opened its doors for business. In 1998, the Taylorsville branch, located at 6189 South Redwood Road, opened to serve TransWests growing membership. In 2001 the TransWests web site, www.transwestcu.com went live to all members with internet access. Online Teller Express offers members to make balance inquiries, transfer funds, apply for loans and pay their bills from the convenience of their own home. TransWest Garfield Branch lobby and drive-u- p hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday drive-u- p hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Garfield Credit Unions Redwood Road location closed for business on June 28 since the Salt Lake County.
